I usually download and install a codec pack called K-Lite. I used to install the full version. Now I only install the standard version. The standard version seems to be all I need. The smallest version could be all I need, but I've never installed the basic version.

There are other codec packs available but I've no experience with them. Some people prefer to install VLC Player that comes with its own codecs loaded.

K-Lite also comes with a player called MPC. MPC stands for Media Player Classic. However the codecs installed by K-Lite can be used by all players such as Windows Media Player.
