Advantages W7-64 over XP-32

Why bother? Just display the control panel in Icon mode and get the
"old" control panel back. No need for any third-party app....
Agreed, whining about nothing.

Just from my experience.
x64 will not give you a speed boost in general but takes advantage of
more memory.
Also specifically written applications for x64 will benefit of speed
as well.
Multiboot works great. I have Linux and Windows on the same machine.
32bit is history, the past. Sadly games are still 32bit mostly.
Professional applications should come also in x64 which will take
advantage over a x64 cpu.

What programs do you have in mind?

All 32 bits applications that I use (mainly music composition) run very
well under W7-64 bits.
Alcohol 120%
Sunbelt firewall
Nero 7

Sunbelt Personal Firewall Software End-of-Life
After many years as leader in firewall protection, Sunbelt Personal
Firewall is being discontinued. While there are many loyal customers for
this product, we have found that most customers prefer to purchase GFI
VIPRE® Antivirus Premium instead, which includes firewall technology AND
antivirus support.

Nero 7 ...
(I'm personally using Nero 11 quite happily on Win 7 Pro 64 Bit)

OTOH, if you want to play with pretty desktops, W7 is superior. (I'm not
sure whether that's a compliment. ;-) )
On the Win 7 machines I've fooled around with I found the desktop
settings tb frustrating. They keep doing things like changing
the font on me when I'm not asking for it.

I'm hoping there's a "Classic Desktop" app that will get around
that once I convert.

Per Wolf K:
It's fine to add new tweaks to the UI, but
never make them defaults.

People get used to doing things a certain way, and most can't be
bothered to try to figure out how to get the old view (etc) back. Keep
in mind that UIs for technical devices are always more or less
arbitrary. A particular design becomes a convention. Conventions are
very useful: without them, you'd have to waste time learning more than
you need in order to make things happen....
I've been ranting about MS moving the furniture around every
chance I get for the last couple years.

But I have yet to hear anybody divulge the business reason for
doing it - and I would think there probably *is* such a reason bc
the people at Redmond aren't dummies.

Meanwhile, all I can think of are those companies with 10,000+
people - all of whom lose productive time getting up to speed
with a seemingly-gratuitously-new UI. It's got to add up to
beeeeeeg money.

I decided to be bold and use Powerpoint 2010 for a presentation.

I entered two words in an outline, decided that they were at the wrong level,
and thyen spent half an hour trying to find out how to promote or demote them
by trial and error. The help files didn't help.

And when it comes to redlining tracking changes in your revision marking,
you'll find that changing the names of functions so you can't find them in new
versions is another thing Microsoft likes to do to waste their customers'
time.

Thanks, was not aware of that. I will stick to the W7 firewall then.

that they are not compatible with W7-64, but inspite of that they will work.

If I am not wrong they don't say it won't work but that they haven't
tested it. One way of encouraging people to update their NERO to a newer
version. Keep the money rolling in!

TMHO Nero says nothing but Windows warns it is not compatible. Perhaps Nero
did not want it to be tested, and - indeed - they want to sell a version
that IS compatible. Money, money, money ...
