Adding CommunityForumsServer to Agent 3.6?

K

KG

I sold the system that I had installed the CommunityForumsNNTPServer to Agent news reader 3.6 news
group servers, and forgot to transfer the installation instructions for installing the server into
Agent. Could someone guide me through the process again so I may copy and save it this time.

Here's the site.

The bad news is that when Microsoft Answers Version 2.0 is released on
February 25, it will no longer work. It will still work for the STO
forums, (MSDN, TechNet, etc.), at least for the time being.

Well, that sucks. Does that apply to the MS bridge, too? Can you point
me to some more information on this?

The good news (sort of) is that a new MS bridge is available for Answers
forums. The bad news is that it won't work with the Technet and other
forums. You have to install both bridges to get all the forum families.
I don't know how they manage that if they both use 127.0.0.1 as an
address. I'm not even going to try.

No bridge will work. There is documentation, but it can only be accessed
by those with proper credentials, and I no longer have them.

Do they use, or can they be configured to use, different ports? That
would be one way to share the single IP.

That will not work for the Answers forums after February 25.

The Community Forums server eliminates the problem.

I repeat. Neither of the bridges will work after February 25. Scrutinize
this thread. You will see one link to a confirmation, but you will not be
able to see the page without MS credentials.

I guess I miss the point. If "credentials" means registration, then I
have credentials. I sign in whenever I start the bridge server. When I
follow the link you posted above, I see a question, an answer, and 18
other replies. When I look at the thread in Thunderbird, I see 19 total
entries. I guess I'll have to wait until February 25 and see what happens.

What I meant by credentials is that I could have seen the report by MS
that the bridge will not be supported after Feb. 25, if I was still an
MVP. That would have given me access.

In that thread, PA Bear confirmed the bridge would be dropped as it was
announced at a meeting that only the chosen were allowed to attend.

Microsoft has announced that it is launching version 2.0 of its forum
software at the end of February 2011. This may well result in an improved
user experience, but reports also indicate that the link that allows use
of the bridge software will no longer be available.

Bruce, I've been aware of this for several weeks now, but reading what
it says above more carefully, I notice that it says "*the* bridge
software." *The* bridge sounds like they mean the Microsoft bridge. I
wonder if therefore there's any possibility that the Community Forums
Bridge will continue to work.

Or if it doesn't, I also wonder if there's any possibility that the
author of the Community Forums Bridge might be able to modify it to
make it work with Answers 2.0. I'm not optimistic, but I sure hope he
can and does do that.

I also have been aware of it but was not sure if it was NDA or not. AFAIK,
MS is closing the back door so no bridge will work. That is what I have
been told.

Yeah, me too. I actually rarely look at the forums, and when I do, it is
usually technet, not answers, but I still want the option. I have
updated my Community Forums bridge to the latest version, dated February
4. If that doesn't work with answers post February 25, I'll just do
without. I don't think I'll miss much. This usenet group is the only
Windows 7 group I visit regularly, anyway.

Same with me, so I didn't mention it until you did. ;-)

That's what I'm afraid of and why I'm not optimistic. But if so, I
think it's a terrible thing for them to do.

The new-age butt lickers and evangelists will take over. The forum is way
to slow for me to go through post by post, but it won't bother them.

LOL! You're probably right.

The forum is way
to slow for me to go through post by post,

If there's no bridge, I'll probably give the new forums at least a
try. But again, I'm not optimistic. This might be my last year as a
Microsoft MVP.

The Community Bridge uses port 119, and, IIRC, the MS Answers Bridge used
120 and the TechNet Bridge used 119. Since I use the Community Bridge for
both (single login, both forums), I don't know if there would be any kind of
conflict by using the MS TechNet Bridge and the Community Bridge.
