When I investigate, I get the message "Google Desktop has been
discontinued". What's goin on?

I really only noticed this when the News gadget hung up on loading.
Despite new versions of Google, bits and pieces remain like the analog
clock, local weather and the scratch pad so it's not a clean break. I
wonder if the best thing to do is to remove desktop gadgets completely?

Thanks to everyone! It still seems a great pity that Google Desktop is
gone. I suppose I had not noticed the announcement and the features I
find useful just disappeared slowly. The desktop search was something I
did not use very often but there still seems nothing that replaces it.
The news feed only went a day or two ago.

I miss the search feature too. But I have found that by tweaking settings
for Windows' bult in indexing I can get tolerably close to what I had
with GDS.
