I own image backup software (Acronis True Image 2011, Macrium Reflect,

2 full image backups to start with, do I really need the Lenovo "System
Recovery DVD"?
I have Acronis TrueImage Home on my Win 7 Professional 64 bit platform
at home. I just used the Clone Disk feature to clone my laptop hard
drive to an external SSD drive mounted in an eSata drive bay (works for
USB too but slower). The system had to reboot to execute the clone
function, but that's okay. Worked well too. The SSD I cloned to is about
half the size of the original disk (256 GB instead of 500 GB). I then
physically swapped the SSD into the laptop and fired it up, and the
system works perfectly, and at lightning speed. Had to do one more
reboot after Windows loaded the SSD drivers when it recognised the
change. So I'm using the original spindle disk as a pluginable backup now.
YMMV.

Yes, but if it understand you correctly, you mean the person who is
getting rid of a computer. I mean the one receiving it.

I don't mean you. I mean that anyone who gets a used computer, whether
as a gift or as a purchase, never really knows what may be on it. Even
if comes from a close relative who is completely trusted, there could
be malware there that wasn't known about.
I would personally just do a "clean" reinstall before giving the PC
away, (or for that matter getting a second hand one) then install and
run CCleaner with the "wipe free space" feature enabled. That'll clean
it out, wouldn't it?

I don't *think* I pressed Send twice :)
I sometimes get double-posting with my news-server. On one famous
occasion I got three; and we all investigated it in the server help desk
group. Some blamed Thunderbird; some blamed the server. It was never
finally resolved, but the weight of evidence was against server.

It happened a few days ago in this group. What happens locally is this;
I send, Tbird goes quiet displaying the green busy-bar image bottom
right corner, Tbird eventually comes back, post is gone and one copy in
sent-items folder.

In the NG the multi-posts all carry the same time.

Yes, it would, but if I were the one receiving the computer, I would
still do a clean installation myself when I got it. Not knowing you,
or whoever it was giving it away), I wouldn't be confident that it was
done correctly.

I didn't think to check my sent items - thanks. There are two of the
post there, with two different times. Oddly, the times in the sent
folder are both two seconds later than the times in the
alt.windows7.general pane.

Your ability to be objective is laudable, Gene.
I've never used that client, but can't help but wonder that it aught to
have built-in protection against double-posting within seconds.

Maybe it does if *I* do it, but not if *it* does it :)

Since I live in CA, maybe I can blame it on a possible earthquake that
caused me to double click. Although I did forget to wear my tinfoil hat
that day...
