Windows 7 SP2?

1/ The tendency of window sizes to change at
random.

2/ No automatic focus at mouse point. (Unlike
Outlook10, Lightroom3,)

3/ Icon size lose their size setting.

4/ Others I can't remember right now.
I don't know what you mean by number 2, and number 4 is void of
actual information. But I have never seen either 1 or 3, not once in
almost three years since I got Windows 7.

Sounds to me like you need to improve your anti-malware protection.

Didn't #2 used to be a part of TweakUI? It automatically had focus follow
the mouse. It was also maybe an add (?) on called X Mouse. (Oh, those old
brain cells hurt).

I've never seen the other symptoms in 1 & 3 nor are there any other issues
that I can't remember. (<;

It's true I download a lot of material, but I
trust Win7 "Security Essentials" to detect
malware.

If you check out Outlook10 you will see how the
mouse pointer works in any pane just by moving it
there. Unlike Windows Explorer that requires a
click to shift the focus.

3. Service Packs are released whenever Microsoft feels like releasing
them. They could decide to release it after a bunch of updates to
consolidate all the updates, or they could do it earlier. Or they
could do it later. That's why the fairly common view " I won't install
a new version of Windows until the first service pack is released" is
nonsense.
Actually, in my case, I did do that once when I upgraded from Windows
2000 to XP. I waited at least 1 or 2 years, and the XP SP1 had already
come out. But I never waited it out that long just to see if SP1 came
out, but just that Win 2000 was working out well enough that I never
needed to upgrade at that time. I think I waited till Win 2000's last SP
came out, which I believe was SP4. I tend to keep the OS till they
announce there is going to be no longer any support for it (not that I
am ever affected by Microsoft's lack of support directly).

There is a "rollup" for Win2K that gives you SP5:
Windows2000-KB891861-v2-x86-ENU.EXE

Yup. And the weird part, is there are actually applications
that won't install, until you install that. So it really
does amount to a Service Pack in some ways.

Maybe the Fisher-Price interface known as Windows 8 is good for cell-
phone users, but it's terrible for those of us trying to do actual
work.
<snip>

I don't do actual work with the OS user interface, I do it with
applications.

I've upgraded to Win8 out of curiosity and my applications all work fine,
so Win8 doesn't negatively interfere with my work.

I recently bought a touch screen and discover that some of my apps work
quite well (or are more efficient) with it. I guess it has nothing to do
with Win8, it would have been the same for those applications with Seven,
Vista or XP with the correct driver for the touch screen.

The touch screen also allowed me to discover some quite nice Metro apps.

My conclusion is if you don't have a touch screen, there is not much to
gain to upgrading but Win8 doesn't interfere with actual work.
