I don't think it was meant to be pretentious. It's a term from
gaming, being reused.

Long, long ago, before computer gaming, we used similar terms in one
of our systems. It was built so that userids and passwords would be
stored in a DB file (before relational DBs). So what to do when the
program was started for the first time and the DB is empty? They
hard-coded userid GOD and password YAHWEH in the system. That would
*never* fly today, it would be a back-door entry, a massive security
breach. In those pre-network days, it wasn't an issue.
Webslave vs. Webservant - subtle but interesting difference between
those two... Hmm, I don't know which better describes the
relationship I have with the websites I maintain. "Web mechanic" just
doesn't do it for me - probably because that implies a level of
competence I don't claim to possess!
