Darn, you beat me to it. I was going to try to tiptoe in at the last moment
and recommend it. It's one of my "must-haves."

Hah, this moving of folders/files is becoming farcical.

Instead of Cutting & Pasting, I have dragged some 20 folders across to
their new home.
4 Folders refused to move and gave me the you-can't-do-this error.
I then opened the folders with the intention to move the contents
manually, make a New Folder with a similar name and file everything in
there, then move that later.
In the destination folder I right-clicked, selected New>Folder.
Nothing showed.
I did that again, nothing showed, no new folder.
I then moved to another folder and went back: there were 2 blank folders.

It has done this before and will likely do again.

It seems that I am spending 80 % of my time trying to get Windows 7 to run
as well as XP, which is somewhat annoying.
I rather continue with Image editing and graphics work I normally do,
grrrr.
I have found a workaround for my Word. Dunno if it is any help for your
problem. As you know I can't open two instances of Word at the same time.
I found that if I open one, give it a name and save to the desktop then do
the same with another, I can work between two.

You don't have to go through all that. Use the RIGHT mouse button to
drag. Then when you drop the folder on the new window, a menu will
come up asking if you want to copy or move the folder. Choose move
and you won't have to delete the original.
Wow! Cool:)

Hi. Just wanted to ask if there is any way to help FC run well on
W7 x64. I guess it is not planned to create a x64 version but
maybe with some tricks.

Apart from not showing the 7zip context menu, in general it is
very buggy. It takes long to open first of all. The when I double
click to open a folder it won't respond. I need to double click
again. Sometimes 3 times. When I drag and drop it takes very long.
Very. And many times it doesn't really do anything. So I need to
cut, open the destination folder and paste. And still many times
it won't work. When I delete files it takes ages and/or gets
stuck. And so on. Many things work bad.

I have been trying all the other alternatives to FC but no one is
as good as FC for my taste, plus it is for free.

Any suggestions to improve these problems if there are any? I am
now using the default windows explorer most of the time as it runs
perfect and fast, but I want the two panels and opening in the two
panels I want by default (D: and D:/Downloads).

Thanks in advance.

[end quote]

So it appears that FreeCommander won't work on Windows 7 x64,
which was my original question. I post this material for the
benefit of others wondering the same thing.

I'm running Win7 64. I've just downloaded and installed Free Commander
and it looks OK. It installs and runs with no errors.
I've only tried a few of the many features but I haven't been able
to get it to crash yet. You have to download the help file separately
and move it into the Commander folder. Also unblock the help file or it
won't work, (right-click FreeCommander.chm, Properties > Unblock).

There must have been something wrong with the poster's Win7 installation
you quoted because everything opens in a snap on my box. Drag and drop
no problem. Perhaps he had Norton or something like that installed.

on the information in the post I quoted, but if you are running it
with no problems, maybe I will give it a try, and see for myself.
It's still hard to find reliable information on the x64 version of
Windows 7, which almost everyone will be running in a year or two.

Win 7 marks everything that has been downloaded from the internet as unsafe.
That's what triggers the warning box when you try to run something you've downloaded.
If you clear the box that says' Always ask before opening this file' then that 'unblocks' it.

Question for you. I've been trying different file managers. I
tried out Q-Dir and UltraExplorer, but that's not the question. I
was trying to get zip folders to display their contents in
UltraExplorer (it won't do it, apparently) and noticed that *some*
of my ZIP folders will display their contents in the right panel
of Windows Explorer when I click to highlight them on the left
side of the program, but other ZIP folders won't show their
contents. It's been driving me nuts for the past hour, trying to
figure out what is different between the ZIP archieves that
display their contents, and the ZIP archives that don't show them.
Any ideas?

Maybe the zip files that won't open need to be unblocked, if they came from
another computer or the net.

All of mine seem to open on the right side.
I've just tried a few zips to see if it was because
of a different account owner but there's no difference.
