I recently noticed that my OneDrive storage was filling up much faster than expected, even though I hadn’t added that many new files recently. After looking through different folders, I found that several documents, photos, videos, and other files had multiple copies. Some had slightly different names, while others looked almost identical.
This made me wonder whether duplicate files could be one of the main reasons behind unnecessary OneDrive storage usage. Duplicates can appear for several reasons, including repeated uploads, synchronization between multiple devices, or accidentally copying files into different folders. The difficult part is identifying which copies are actually duplicates and which ones are separate versions that need to be retained.
For a small collection, manually checking the folders may be enough. Sorting files by name, size, or file type can make it easier to spot obvious duplicates. However, this approach becomes increasingly difficult when an account contains thousands of files. Opening each document or comparing every photo individually can take a significant amount of time.
I started looking at tools such as SysInfo OneDrive Duplicate File Finder Tool because a dedicated scanner can organize duplicate files before anything is deleted. This seems more practical than randomly searching through folders and removing files based only on similar names.
A OneDrive Duplicate Remover can also be useful when the objective is to reduce unnecessary storage consumption. However, I think reviewing the detected duplicates before removal is important. Two files can have similar names but contain different information, especially when multiple versions of work documents are involved.
Another thing I would check first is whether OneDrive synchronization is functioning correctly. If the same files continue appearing after cleanup, deleting duplicates alone may not solve the underlying problem.
