Updated SATA driver, now dvd writer problems

B

Bob H

I was geting a BSOD due to a driver for my SATA disks in AHCI mode, so I
updated the driver, and now in Device Mangler under IDE ATA/ATAPI
controller there is only the Intel (R) PCH SATA AHCI Controller, and no
ATA Channel controllers.

Consequently, I think, now my CD/DVD writer is now a SCSI device in
Device Mangler.

It is still recognised in windows explorer etc and I can read the files,
but I have a CD label program which used to read the CD/DVD and put the
text it read onto a lable so I could then print it.

Now that program complains it cannot read any files on the dvd disk.

Now I either need an ATA controller for my DVD writer or another
program which will do as the another one used to do.

I have had a look for such a program, but not sure which would be suitable.

Any ideas please

I forgot to add that the dvd writeris an IDE device/connection

Uninstall the DVD drive in device manager. Windows should detect it
and reinstall it for you, using the correct driver.

Thanks, but that didn't make any difference, even after a reboot.

It is still showing as a SCSI CD Rom Device

What is the make and model of motherboard ?

Or if it's a store-bought kinda PC (Dell/HP/Acer/Gateway),
the brand and model number of the computer ?

Is there a compatibility mode in the bios for the sata hard drive?

The motherboard is an Asus P55P7-E, and the PC is a homebuilt one which
is upgraded every now and again.

Everything works, in that the DVD writer is recognised and files can be
read in Windows Explorer, but what gets me is that the CDR label program
I have, albeit an old program, has worked ok and read/outputted the list
of files to a CD case cover up until the driver change.

Thanks

No, there is only IDE or AHCI and RAID

I have had my SATA HD's on AHCI for over 12 months now, and to the best
of my knowledge the DVD writer has had a ATA controller set to it in
Device Mangler

Update.

I uninstalled and then reinstalled the CD labeler program, and now it
can read the files on the dvd in the drive.

Something as simple as that sorted it!!!

Using the motherboard selection menu here, I'm not getting a match on that string.

http://vip.asus.com/forum/topic.aspx?board_id=1&model=P7P55D-E&SLanguage=en-us

The closest match I can find, is P7P55D-E.

http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=P7P55D-E&p=1&s=32

P55 - Six SATA II ports (IDE mode should use a default driver
AHCI can use Intel driver, or MSAHCI
I wouldn't have expected a SCSI layer here,
at least not a separate SCSI entry in devmgmt)

JMB363 - Two SATA II (one of which is black connector on mobo???)
IDE interface
LoadOrderGroup = System Bus Extender
ServiceBinary = %12%\jraid.sys
DeviceDesc="JMicron JMB36X Controller"
(SCSI was commented out in the INF file)

MV9123 - Two SATA III ports.
ServiceBinary = %12%\mv91xx.sys
LoadOrderGroup = "SCSI Miniport"
mv91xxDesc= "Marvell 91xx SATA 6G Controller"

I'm guessing you're on a gray port (MV9123) and you could try moving
to the black port controlled by JMB363 ?

Oops, sorry, my bad.
It is the P7P55D-E.

The DVD writer is on a IDE port so to my mind any SATA driver change
should not affect that.

Anyway, if you see my post below, the problem is now solved thanks.

Cool. Perhaps it installed its own ASPI layer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_SCSI_Programming_Interface

The free Nero Infotool, has a display that can read out some
info on ASPI. But since it hardly ever comes up any more
as an issue to be solved, it might not be worth the time
playing with it.

"CD/DVD writer is now a SCSI device"
I haven't seen that since win XP and ME.
In those, a parallel port scanner install might trigger the issue.
Seems that the scanner install also installed SCSI drivers.
The Microsoft CD/DVD drivers somehow saw the SCSI drivers, and
started sort of acting like the CD drive was a SCSI device.
Re installing the apps for the scanner and CD cured the problems, just
as you mentioned.

Yup, I would've suggested that too eventually, but I had assumed that
you had already tried that. :)

These CD labelers tend to save some system information when they are
first installed, rather than reading it from the system itself again.
The reinstall resets its assumptions.
