shortcut on desktop

It will not drag at all when the right touchpad is pressed.
I went back to the Best Buy store and tested the model they had on show.
It did the same thing. Fortunately the Toshiba rep was present and he
could not get drag to work with the right button clicked. (All the other
laptop models on show could). He tried all the settings and could find
no solution. Finally we decided it was the way that type of new
"multi-touch" touchpad worked.

Mine is going back because it is almost impossible to use this way.
Shame because it was very nice otherwise. Model is P855-S5200.
Thank you. I hope your description will trigger a useful response from
someone, but I have to admit that it went right over my head. Dragging
with the right button depressed? I've never heard of that before.

I do get the right mouse context menu when I click the right button.
What I do not get is that it will just not drag when the right button is
depressed (like to create a shortcut). Left button dragging (which lets
you copy the item) works fine but dragging with the right button gives
you the additional option not just to copy but to create a shortcut and
one cannot drag with the right button on this laptop making it very hard
to create any shortcuts.
Oh, now I know what you're describing, I think. Thanks for this
additional info.

Thanks for bringing this to light. If I understand correctly, this is
a feature I've used maybe twice in ten years, so I might have never
stumbled across it.

How do you create a desktop shortcut from an existing file?

I use it all the time. I thought everybody did.

How do you create a desktop shortcut from an existing file?
That's not a common task for me, having done it only a few times in my
entire Windows lifetime, but I would simply right click on the
desktop, select New from the context menu, select Shortcut, and follow
the prompts. Easy peasy, no dragging required.

I only have three icons on my desktop on a regular basis: Computer,
Network, and Recycle Bin. That's why creating shortcuts is such a rare
task for me.

Funny, my multitouch Synaptics touch-pad works as you say it should.
Perhaps another Synaptics driver update/change would fix the issue.

It's very standard...and has been for a very long time.

You get a menu with choice of actions when you release the button over
the destination.

My menu shows 7-zip, copy here, move here, create shortcuts here, and
cancel.

I see from another post of yours that you now do recognize this item, so
forget what I just said :)

I use it maybe twice as often as you do, judging from what you wrote in
your other reply...

For some reason, I was thinking of "right-click, drag to select"
rather than what's really being discussed. Oopsie :)

I updated the driver with no help. Which driver are you using? Is it a
Toshiba laptop?

Mouse would be great but I take this laptop to all sorts of places and
often work lying down with it proped up on my lap. Because I am rarely at
a table using a mouse is not practical for me. So I am forced to use the
touchpad much of the time.
Logitech M305 = compact / cordless / USB nano-dongle - that can be left
plugged in without being too obtrusive.
I have three of'em, and on my Laptop one, when surface space is impractical
or limited, works great on left thigh !

I have a new Toshiba Windows 7 64 bit laptop with a synaptic touchpad that
has an annoying defect.

In previous laptops I owned, dragging with the left touchpad button gave
me the option to "copy" the item to were I am dragging while dragging with
the right touchpad button gave me the additional option to create a
shortcut.

However, on this new latop, dragging with the right touchpad button
pressed (to create a desktop shortcut) is almost impossible!

So I would like to add a rt (or left) button context menu to
"create shortcut on desktop".

Is that possible? How?

Thanks.

Jeff
Unless your'e left handed, and have switched mouse buttons in Control Panel
| Mouse (like me), ...then,
I always thought it was Left-click hold and drag, (no right mouse button)
:)

In message <[email protected]>, "(e-mail address removed)"
"Context Menu, Special Drag" for the secondary (Right hand) button
is exactly the setting I would need, but I cannot find any such setting
in my Synaptics touchpad settings. Maybe that is what is turned off.
Could you tell me where in the settings hierarchy you find it in yours?
(Have you _tried_ switching the buttons to see if it's any
different/better/worse?)

FWIW, I can't find it either: device "TouchPad V7.2", driver "v11.1.3.2
28Aug08", Windows XP SP3 on a Samsung NC-20 - but I have the
functionality, in that if I hold down right-click and drag, I get a
popup menu when I let go (currently 7-Zip, Copy Here, Move Here, Create
Shortcuts Here [why plural?], and Cancel). I've never used it as I
didn't know about it.

It may be there and I haven't spotted it: I do Control Panel, Mouse, and
I get Mouse Properties, with the normal tabs for Buttons, Pointers,
Pointer Options, Wheel, and Hardware that I'd expect for any mouse, plus
one for Device Settings, which contains a further Settings button, which
brings up a whole new window, headed "Properties for Synaptics TouchPad
V7.3 on PS/2 Port 3" (I wonder what's on the other two! This netbook
certainly has no _external_ PS/2 ports!), with sections (a menu rather
than tabs) for Overview, Tapping, Buttons, Virtual Scrolling, Pointer
Motion, and Sensitivity, each of which has settings and sub-menus,
several to two levels. This is under XP, but I suspect 7 is similar.

Don Phillipson said:
For PCs as "entertainment centres," yes: and that is where the market
points, away from PCs as business machines. Remember, PCs (except
for Apples) were initially marketed as business machines: it was the
software makers who induced all those office clerks and bankers to
spend time at work playing Minesweeper, avatar sex games and so on.
I once read or heard someone from Microsoft saying the early games
(solitaire, minesweeper) were really mouse training aids, but that if
they'd called them that, no-one would have touched them. Can't speak for
your sex games though!

It's a Dell but it's a multitouch driver from Synaptics for the touchpad

Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad
Provider Synaptics
Date 10/29/2009
Version 14.0.13.0

Windows 7 Home Premium, Synaptics Touchpad version 7.2, driver version
15.0.10 from the NC10 section of the Samsung website. The Toshiba
version should be more or less identical, otherwise, download the latest
driver from the Synaptics website, *create a restore point* and install
it, ignoring the warnings about manufacturers customising the driver for
their machines.

Control Panel - Mouse - Device Settings tab (The one with the red
splodge on it) - Settings - Buttons - Right Button Action - Select
"Context Menu, Special Drag" - Apply.

To swap the buttons, use the Buttons tab (on the extreme left hand side)
of the control panel applet.

OK. I figured it was just a brainquake; it's nice to know the exact mode
of the 'quake.

And I did see your other post.
