RemoveWAT Temporarily

The Razor's Edge

I lost my hard disk and with that the recovery partition. I purchased a new
hard disk and borrowed a copy of Windows 7 to get my machine back up. I then
purchased a new Windows 7 Upgrade and when I tried to activate it, the
message said it was for an upgrade and not a new install, hence failed.
Numerous calls, chats, emails to Microsoft failed and they refused to change
the code even though I proved to them I had the key for Windows Vista and
the new key for Windows 7. I live in Cuba and I waited three months for the
disk and now have to wait another 3 months for the OS and Windows 7 has
regressed to partial functionality. I tried to download the RemoveWAT
2.2.6.1 from numerous locations but they are all just advertising schemes
and video downloaders and a host of other hoaxes using WAT to get you there
like putting sex with young girls in the meta tags on your web site.

If anyone has a copy of RemoveWAT 2.2.6.1 that could be posted, Please do so

Thanks

One of the more common methods of doing a fresh install using the
upgrade CD is to do the install from the upgrade CD as you previously
had done. When it asks you to activate it decline the option and
continue with the install. When it is finished use the normal shutdown
menu.

Then boot from the CD again but this time actually tell it to do an
Upgrade rather than a custom or fresh install. It will take longer as
it will be doing an upgrade which just takes longer as it has to deal
with files already installed on the hard drive.

When the second install is finished go ahead and activate the computer
with the upgrade key and it should work.

Give it a try and let us know how things worked out for you as there are
other methods which are more difficult like modifying the registry and such.

That is how I did a clean install of Windows 7 (Ultimate x64) using an
upgrade release. Worked perfectly. No problem activating.

This method is Option 4 in this tutorial:

I lost my hard disk and with that the recovery partition.

And you hadn't followed the instructions that came with the computer
that told you how to burn the contents of that partition to a CD, and
how important it was that you should do that in case you lost your
hard disk?

I purchased a new
hard disk and borrowed a copy of Windows 7 to get my machine back up. I then

Why did you buy an Upgrade when what you wanted to do was a clean
installation?

I don't know what the OP's situation is, but in my case it was a matter
of availability. My connections to the local university make the
academic release available to me, and it is only available as an upgrade.
So I could either install Windows 7 Ultimate for free (for me) twice, or
go buy the unconditional retail version at Staples for $320. It doesn't
take an advanced degree to figure that one out.

Mine was similar.
I upgraded the PC parts and the OS from W98 to Vista then to Windows 7
over the years. The hard drive finally went toast. Replaced the hard
drive and wanted to put Windows 7 back on the system but no way was I
going to with the stack of W98 floppy disk just to get Windows 7 back in
operation. I had my data files all backed up but not the OS. I did the
double install from the upgrade disk, activated the license, and went on
my way. I still have all the old Original install floppy's (W98) and
upgrade CD from Vista and Windows 7.

Now I just image the beast from time to time and reload the image if I
need to replace the boot drive. The data files are backed up on a
Raid-5 file server system as well as on external "toaster" style USB drives.

I live in Cuba, a blockaded country and some sites are not accessible from
here, most are but some not. My dialup connection to the internet although
not restricted on my end is blocked to some locations in the US only and I
have full access to the internet.

My problem began and I did have a back made of the recovery partition
(windows vista) however we moved to a new house and somehow that disk never
made the move or it got stored in some bizzare location I have yet to
discover. When the disk in my computer packed it, I ordered a new one from a
distributor in Canada and had it shipped to my friend in Vancouver who then
shipped it to me. The distributor could not ship directly to Cuba either
because the disk was manufacture in the US and they were bound to honor the
53 year old blockade or be fined by the US government.

So after getting the disk and not having the orginal nor the backup, I
borrowed a copy of Windows 7 because I couldn't find anyone who had a copy
of Vista, which would have made everything fine because I could have used my
Vista product key and then done an upgrade or stuck with Vista. I purchased
an upgrade copy of Windows 7 and had it shipped to my friend as well and it
is being shipped here but could take a couple of months due again to
blockade issues.

So now my problem is that Windows has begun it's little game with me to
authenticate and until my new OS gets here I need to get full functionality
on my laptop.

If anyone has removewat, please upload.

My options are extremely limited

If you purchased an upgrade copy of Windows 7, perhaps your
friend could email you the license key from the package ?
The license key, is most of the value of the package.

You need media, which perhaps you could borrow locally. And
the license key from the upgrade you purchased, makes the
installation legitimate.

If it doesn't work, you can always wait for your friend to send
up the media from the upgrade package.

GlowingBlueMist has already provided details in his post,
as to how to install an upgrade version, without an OS
being present on the computer already. You basically
install twice, without activating during the first installation.

So now all you need, is a Windows 7 DVD, plus have your
friend email you the key from the upgrade you've purchased.

Do you know whether activation from a Cuban IP address works or not ?
Is the Microsoft activation server, set up to communicate with Cuban IP
addresses ?

Also, in terms of formats, there is a tool for transferring the
Windows 7 installer DVD, to a USB key. You can install from a USB
key, if that is easier to get into Cuba than a DVD would be.

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool

The tool is 2,721,168 bytes, and can transfer a Windows 7 ISO9660 contents
to a USB key. The tool is a damn nuisance, but better than nothing. It
has an issue with bootsect, where a 64 bit OS must be used to transfer
a 64 bit DVD to the USB key. I've copied Windows 7 RTM as well as
Windows 8 RC to a USB key with this. I use that here, to speed up
the install process.

The Razor's Edge

Well, I speak English to my English friends and Spanish the rest of the
time. There is very little English spoken in Cuba, however. I am a Canadian
Citizen, University Educated. I worked in the computer industry since CPM
was the ticket and Bill still had pimples. I ran my own successful network
consulting group in Canada for many many years and started with Windows 286.

The problem all started when I lost the recovery partition on my hard disk
which was a Vista OEM install and my backup CD disappeared when we moved. My
problem is not the lack of experience or computer knowledge but rather the
lack of media. In Cuba, all companies that have networks are owned by the
state and the networks and software are rigidly controlled by the military.
Cuban citizens are not allowed access to the internet other than through the
internet services provided by phone company and post office cyber locations.
A connection in the home is not allowed, however being a foreigner, even
though I am a permanent resident, I am allowed. I was lucky enough to bribe
a co-worker of my wifes to lend me a copy of 7 but it turned out to be a
full version and not an upgrade. As my options were limited I decided to go
ahead anyway.

I have both keys, one for Vista and one for the Upgrade to 7 Home Premium at
a cost of 225.00 Cdn. by the way, but no media. When I try to activate the
WAT server at Microsoft replies with "This key is for an upgrade and not a
new install. Microsoft were unrelenting and refused to assist me even though
I proved to them I owned the Vista and 7 keys. If I had used an upgrade 7 CD
I wouldn't have this problem but finding one proved difficult. As I couldn't
wait for 2 months for my disk to come I opted to get my machine functioning
and now of course I am somewhat hooped. I guess my main problem is that I
have been using MS Security Essentials for my antivirus and that will cease
to function in a couple of weeks. I can put up the the black desktop and the
nag screens but Antivirus is a must and without updates pretty much a crap
shoot for protection.

Downloading AVG or some other Freeware would be a painful process because of
the size and the speed of my connection (56K) dialup that most of the time
connects at 46.3K. The cruel blockade has forced Cuba to use satellite for
all communications outside the country and keep us internet users throttled
back to conserve bandwidth. There is a fibre cable running from here to
Venezuela that is complete but the end nodes have not been implemented yet
and are still in testing phase but should be operational by the end of the
year. My connection offering will be upgraded at that time, to what i don't
know but anything will be better than what I have now.

Thanks guys for your help. Perhaps someone has the RemoveWAT 2.2.6.1 to
upload and help me temporarily.

If you have good download speeds and can burn your own disks here is a
link where you can download the Vista CD files needed to make your own
install CD. The link looks like it is for Vista Ultimate but the CD it
creates can be used to install ANY version of Windows Vista based on the
license key you have. If your key is for home edition the CD will
install the home edition rather than the Ultimate version.

http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/57-windows-vista-direct-download-links

While it only included SP1 you should be able to download SP2 update
image directly from Microsoft or do the windows update method.

By following the instructions you should be able to use your existing
Vista product key and bring your system back to life, as Vista.

A pain I know but it is one way to get things working provided you can
download the three files plus the program to put the disk together.

T

The Razor's Edge

Unfortunately, my download speed is throttled due to the blockade against
Cuba by the EE.UU and as a result, even though I have full access to the
internet, the government/phone company restricts home internet access to 56K
dialup so as not to put a strain on the satellite uplink to the world.

A fibre optic cable has been laid and has been completed connecting Cuba to
Venezuela and should be operational by year end but I am not holding my
breath. Well I am but I cheat a little and gulp a few in between.

Downloading is not an option for anything larger than 50meg which will take
about 5 hours, eating into my total allowable monthly quota of 80 hours.

You guys have been so great in responding to my plea and maybe someday I can
return the favor. I look forward to the opportunity.

I would like to thank glowingbluemist for temporarily solving my problem.

I ran the slmgr -rearm and it gave me back full functionality of the desktop
including Microsoft Security Essentials.

I noticed in the registry that it had reset the entry to 78hex 120dec and am
not sure if that is true or not. According to glowingbluemist the command
can be run a max of three (3) time each of which extends the trial by 30
days. I will wait and see but for all intents my problem has been solved
thanks to you diligent bunch.

Once again thanks so very much, you help has been greatly appreciated.

I can get you the latest version of RemoveWAT. What language do you need it in?
Since it's only about 4 megabytes you'd think you could use a proxy server to
get it. I can get you anything just tell me what language.
If you want to do things like honest people do why not just pay $39.95 U.S. to
download windows 8 from the Microsoft site. It's full version.

Well Tony, I do things like honest people do. I only needed to remove the
authentication to allow me to use my machine while I waited for my purchased
copy of Windows 7 to arrive in Cuba. That is a process that took nearly two
months. Now I have my copy that arrived yesterday. I have since formatted my
disk and installed and authenticated my windows 7. My legal copy of Windows
7 upgrade cost me $225.00 Canadian.
