PDF reader

HP Home Premium Win 7 Sp1

After much difficulty but successfully following tech support
instructions repairing files, etc., I find the default PDF reader now
shows the pages but the functions which usually show to the left where
each page can be selected individually is not there. I ask here
because I am so frustrated for not being able to understand the people
who were supposed to help me. I had to ask over and over to repeat so
finally gave up.
Assuming you are using Adobe Reader XI (The Industry Standard - free
version downloadable from Adobe website) then this will get you your
thumbnails:

View >> Show/Hide >> Navigation Panes >> Page Thumbnails

Good luck.

Has your pdf document got more than one page? You need to have a
multipage document to have this feature activated.

I should have also said that when creating a pdf file, you need to set
it clearly in the settings that you wan to create the bookmarks and
AFAIK only Adobe Acrobat does this. I haven't used any other pdf
creators to try this. Thumbnails are nothing more than simple
bookmarks!!. I can post an image of my settings window if need be.

Use Revo (free) or Your Uninstaller (free trial) to do a complete
uninstall, no leftovers to interfere.
a) If you want to keep Adobe, d/l a fresh install package, and reinstall.
Or
b) Replace Adobe with Foxit (free for personal/home use) as default PDF
reader. It includes plug-ins for browsers.

You're welcome. Glad to help, and glad you like it.
I tried Adobe, of course, and used Foxit for a while until I found
problems with printing that caused me to revert to Adobe.

Then last night I tried PDF Exchange Viewer for an hour and ended up
buying the Pro version.

I can't tell you why you had printing problems, but I can tell you
that I've been using Foxit Reader exclusively for several years now,
and I have never had *any* problems with it, printing or otherwise.

It depends on the source of the PDF how compatible a non-Adobe reader will
be. For most users, never an issue. For some advanced functions within a
PDF there are some functions that are exclusive to Adobe that don't render
on non-Adobe engines. I can't speak to what they are specifically I just
know this as we replaced Adobe Reader in our enterprise (180,000 seats) and
then had to add Adobe back as a secondary reader as one of our survey
systems required Adobe. In this case it was after a class you were sent a
survey which was a fillable PDF. When you were done you hit a finished
button near the bottom and it would use your email client to sent just the
data (some quasi-XML format) back to the survey system for import to a
database.

I can tell you exactly what it was, Ken, but only with hindsight. If you
click on control panel / display (XP or Win7) you get something that
says you can make the screen easier to read by setting something that's
normally 100% to 125%. Under XP I had long had this set to 125%, and an
update to Foxit a while ago made the screen you get in Foxit after
selecting 'print' deeper than my screen depth, such that the 'print' and
'quit' (or whatever) buttons were always off the bottom of the screen.

I reported this to Foxit and, after a while, got a message that I did
not understand. What it meant was "restore that setting to 100%" but it
was couched in terms I just didn't understand at the time.

When I moved from XP to Win7 there was a pdf document that Foxit could
not display properly. I can't remember the details now, but I tried
Adobe reader and it worked. I moved back to Adobe with some reluctance,
because it is bloated AND I had paid for a version of Foxit.

Almost all of my PDF documents are one-page so that explains why the
"Page Thumbnails" are grey-ed out! I took the advice posted here and
downloaded Foxit and I'll give it a try. So far, I like what I see!
Thanks!

Bill
