Newsreader in Win 7

Some people will tell you to use Windows Live Mail; others will tell
you to use Thunderbird; still others may have other recommendation. My
advice is to ignore all such recommendations. I personally use
Microsoft Outlook for e-mail and Forte Agent for newsgroups, but you
should try several and choose what *you* like best, rather than make
your decision based on what I, or anyone else, likes best.
This has been a prime example of damned if you do, damned if you don't. Ever
since I learned how to use a computer I have watched as people complain
about MS. One of the big bitches was them bundling. So now they offer an OS
without any mail program, so people are mad.
If you are smart enough to get on line with the new PC with Win. 7, you
can load and try any number of programs for mail and news, yet it seems to
still cause a lot of complaining. <shrug>
I have 1 PC with win.7 and love it. WLM was a snap for me, and if I can do
it anyone can. If it was not for the one program I use all the time that can
not be replaced, I would buy a copy of W-7 for this machine.

MS was forced because of legal reasons to remove the mail program and a
couple of others.

You have a link for that statement?

So what do *you* use?

I've been using xNews for probably the past 12 years.

http://xnews.newsguy.com/

It's not bloatware, only 1.22 Mb in size.

More filters, score files, regex, crosspost control, 6 levels of color,
font quote controls, external editor support.

It's fassssst! The GUI is un-obtrusive (no "glitz" whatsoever). It's
free. The only price you pay is a fair learning curve.

I've never used a more capable Usenet newsreader, imho, of course. ;)

Since Win 7 made me lose my news reader, as previously available in Outlook
Express, I am looking for a simple newsreader. I only use it to read a few
newsgroups and I am using a free news server (Eternal September). I am not
into heavy downloading of binaries.

This must be a common problem with the advent of Win 7. Would someone have
suggestion how to fill this void?

Thank you.
I had the same question in a different group. Their answer was

Thunderbird works pretty good, still getting used to it. Should be fine
in another week after I get used to the interface.

Hope this helps

Yep. Try a couple of the suggested options, and build a valid opinion of
your own!
I tried Thunderbird for quite some time for both news and email, and could
not get it quite the way I wanted it, which was like the Outlook Express
that I had been using for years. I downloaded and installed Live Mail, and I
like it much better. That's not saying that it's "better at email," just
that *I* like it better :)

it's obvious microsoft has no interest in nntp news groups. they prefer web
based forums, so windows live mail is a very basic newsreader. it does not
support yenc, is not good at all for multi part binaries. For binaries flv
rar etc, i use xnews which has always done exactly what i wanted. has great
filtering too. it's no longer supported but a good newsreader.

I use the free Gravity news reader and have for many years. It is now
be supported on sourceforge and a new version just came out a while
back. It just works.

I find it very easy to use and love the rules. It has a lot of options but it is still easy
to use with very little setup.
