Works really well for Frank and Alias crap.
You mean I'm not the only one who filters out Frank and Alias crap?

Windows Live Mail works fine as a news reader. It has no restrictions and
looks and feels like the old Express. >

I am a very long way from thinking WLM is like Outlook Express. Reading
through messages by clicking on a list is extremely different from hovering
over a 'Next' button and clicking on it, and that is only for a start.
You can place a next button on the toolbar and then click on it to get
to the next unread message. Just right click in the tool bar section
to customise.

I'm using WLM in Win 7 after years of Outlook Express in XP.
I find WLM is basically almost exactly the same as OE .
You can get general Newsgroup Servers for free i.e..
news.aioe.org
news.eternal-September.org.

You can transfer your Email & Newsgroup accounts & existing messages
from OE to WLM .
This following info from another Net source.

"In OE, go to Tools/Accounts, select which account you want to transfer,
then
click Export. A *.iaf file will be generated. Do this for each account you
want to transfer. Windows Live Mail can import these files to re-create
your account(s). In WLM, go to Tools/Accounts, then click the Import
button. Browse to the .iaf file, and you're done.

Your email messages can be imported into WLM by clicking the File Menu,
Import/Messages. Browse to the folder that contains your .dbx files from
OE, then follow the directions. If you're not sure where your .dbx files
are for OE, then click Tools/Options, select the Maintenance Tab, then click
the Store Folder button. The path can be copied from that window and placed
on the Run line to open the folder. "

Hi, Johnbee.
I am a very long way from thinking WLM is like Outlook Express.
WLM is much like OE on the surface. Underneath, there are significant
differences.
Reading through messages by clicking on a list is extremely different from
hovering over a 'Next' button and clicking on it, and that is only for a
start.
Long ago, still in OE (before WLM, even before WM), I found <Ctrl>U to move
to Next Unread Message and <Ctrl>J for Next Unread Folder. When I got a
mouse with programmable buttons, I set them to <Ctrl>U and <Ctrl>J; then I
could move through a newsgroup easily. And when OE added <Ctrl>H to toggle
Show Replies to My Messages, I set the Scroll Wheel to that. ;<)

Sure beats trying to hover over an onscreen button! OR clicking on a list!
Or even stretching my small hand to press the <Ctrl> and <U> keys at the
same time. :>(

Even now, using the Community NNTP Bridge in WLMail, I can read Microsoft's
Forums the same way. Makes the Forums not quite unbearable. (But it sure
doesn't keep me from wishing for the MS newsgroups to continue!)

In case anyone thinks I am arguing for the sake of it, generally this topic
is a crucial one. I say that because ISPs seem to be dumping Usenet
services, they say because of lack of demand. It is already the case that
in order to access newsgroups one has to be pretty determined. Us users
ought to be very helpful and accurate of course but in particular to
prospective newsgroup users because we can be slightly instrumental in
delaying the inevitable end a little.

It is certainly true that WLM is OK as a news reader, in particular that it
is possible to set it up by trying hard, unlike most others which will
defeat many people. What I mean by that was that it was the only one I
managed to get working and I am not all that thick.

Thanks, all the blurb I read from Microsoft "forums" on it, kept referring
to NNTP capability being "built in" for Microsoft news server, with no
mention of Usenet :)

Is there any filtering in TB for usenet?
Tools, Message Filters, select relevant group, add one or more filters,
for each filter match on one or more criteria and specify one or more
actions ...

But they are far more limited for news messages than they are for emails....

You will notice that I did originally say TB filtering was poor compared
to other newsreaders ...

You can use WLM for any news servers/accounts that you care to set up. It's
very similar to OE in most respects. I use WLM with
news.eternal-september.org. The account is free, but registration is
required.

NNTP is the protocol for Usenet.

Excellent thanks. I expect that the no-help feature is because Microsoft
wants newsgroups to die out.

Although many people are using WLM for email and newsgroups, there are
many choices. Look at a few and decide for yourself which is right for
you. For me, WLM is fine. But, that's just me.
The Netbook I just bought came with WLM pre=loaded.
I managed to get my e-mail up and running, but, will have to fiddle with
it more.
Somehow can't find how to get back to a view that shows the folders (in
box etc) and it opens up with a "Contacts" view.
Still looking for a "layout" option that lets me choose options etc.
It seems to be complying with Windows7 and hides things from us mere
mortals :)

They both can be used for e-mail, but how good they are is your
decision. Try whichever one you want (or both) and see for yourself.
Other people work differently from the way you do, so their opinions
shouldn't matter.

Personally, I use Agent 6.0 as a newsreader (and I like it very much)
and Outlook 2010 as an e-mail client.
My next "hurdle" is to put Outlook 2010 on "She Who Must Be Obeyed" WinXP
computer, so that she can "Sync" contacts/calendar etc with her new iPAD.
Not looking forward to the learning curve of changing from OE to Outlook
though.
