network password?

Good idea, but just because you add a password doesn't mean your wife
will have to enter it manually. You can have Windows enter it
automatically, if you'd like, when the system starts up.
Can you tell me where and how I tell Windows to enter the password
automatically?
Thank you.

That is what I did. Added a password and everything worked just fine. I
had assumed that since she did not need a password to access her laptop,
neither would I but apparently Windows 7 requires a password for remote
access.

Thank you for your help.

Adding a password evidently solved the problem.

Since you wanted to access your wife's laptop from your computer,
it is also possible (As I mentioned previously) to add an account and
password that is identical to the one on your computer. This way, you
would have been able to leave her account unchanged.
I usually do that, and since I end up hassling with the various
computers when they have a problem, would likely have established an
account with "elevated" capability.

Actually, I'm not a great fan of remote access in general, particularly
when a wireless network is involved. I prefer to have a common storage
area or areas, whether they are "shares" or a LAN based server or hard
drive.

I too worry about remote access. So on my wife's laptop nothing is
shared except an old printer wired to her laptop and a single folder I
use to transfer an occasional file.
Primarily I wanted to access her printer but could not do so until I
connected with her laptop.

I've got multiple computers running here, some of them "headless" (no
monitor attached at all) and others have a monitor that hasn't been
turned on in a year or more. Remote access is extremely handy to me.

Just installed a new router for my home wlan.

When I try to access another laptop on the home wlan, it asks me for the
"network username and password". Not sure what it is asking for. The
combinations I tried were not accepted. Where do I find the username and
password combination it is asking for?

Thank you.

Jeff
Add your computers to a homegroup:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\HomeGroup
