Need Help With Start Menu

Then you're entitled to a full refund...
Someone merely offered an alternative. Sometimes they work for you, sometimes
they don't. Doesn't mean you should be an ass about it. Same advice as you
give above. EIther you like the answer or you don't.
Apparently you don't wish to be civil like others as well.
My favorite part of Dock's responses is his use of the word
"correctly".

I hope others will respond. Your response was useless.

The part about using the search feature to find icons on my start menu
that will not arrange themselves properly is amazingly stupid.

Why respond to the post at all? Just let people that have brains
respond.

Ain't you just a ray o' sunshine!

Well I was going to respond but am now afraid that if my answer
doesn't live up to your expectations you might berate me and hurt my
feelings.

So I'll just keep my answer to myself...

What a bunch of fags you pussies turned out to be!!!

Dock

That's for the desktop. Dock is having trouble with the start menu and
the alphabet.
Actually, I am having problems with moronic twits that are offering
useless help in a help group.

When asking for assistance to make folders not alphabetize themselves, I
am told that it is easier to just let them do whatever they wish.

This is dumbassery advice and the ones, such as yourself, who agree that
it is just the bestest available advice and should really be good
enough, are just as moronic.

If someone has a hole in their bucket and asks for advice on how to
patch the hole, the advice should not be to not use a bucket.

This group is a joke. Are there any posters here who have owned a
computer for more than 6 months?

Give it time, Dave.

I haven't been able to nail down exactly what I am doing when they
change. I do stuff on the computer, open programs, browse the web, work
in my file manager, listen to songs, etc... and when I go back to the
start menu, wam, they are all back in alphabetical order.

Like you, I have rearranged them and shut down and restarted and they
would stick, so I would think I had it working correctly. But, they
always change back.
Well it's been several hours now and I've switched off a couple of times,
surfed the net, sent and received emails, played a few games and had a
couple of Microsoft updates and still the start menu entries have stayed
where I set them.
I took snapshots of the registry while re-arranging the icons and it looks
like the settings are saved in this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartPage
with the data held in the binary value 'AllProgramsOrder'.

I renamed this value and rebooted and the start menu entries reverted to alphabetical
sorting, even though the box 'Sort All Programs menu by name' was still clear.

I looks like when you select the box 'Sort All Programs menu by name' in the customize
section Explorer ignores the reg key above and sorts alphabetically by default.
When the box is not selected then Explorer reads the reg key and sorts according to
the data held there.
If your settings are not being saved have a look at that reg key.

When I read Andy's response, I did two things:

1. I told K that the OP was going to react negatively.

2. I took a poll. Two out of two in this room agreed with Andy. We just
got used to the new way and went on from there.

For me, Andy's method became in fact much more convenient than the old
way, but K just got used to it. No better, no worse.

I haven't done any pinning yet (except in the task bar), but I am
listening to your suggestion :)
Gene.

You and I can agree to disagree. I've found 99% of Andy's posts are from
the hip, uneducated responses.

This group is a joke.
No, it's very helpful to those who aren't obnoxious jerks like
yourself.

Yes, for around 30 years so I've learned to use the bozo bin.

You'll find some other obnoxious jerks there, you can have a party!

Why not honor the other 1%? :)
OTOH, I just read another of Andy's posts. I have changed my mind
completely. Forget that 1% of which I spoke...

People in this thread have been offering useful suggestions. Please
don't accept any of them.

I am not too sure what Dock was expecting. MS employees? There are some
knowledgeable and helpful people here. Most of us are just new to Win7 and
are helping each other. Might I suggest to Dock the if this group is such a
disappointment, s/he gets her/his bum off to find paid help

This will be a great group once the yahoos get bored of talking to
themselves and clear out. The serious posters just need to stick
with it.

You can always try alt.os.windows-7 too. It's new, but I expect it too grow.
