Microsoft Works Suite 2005

That depends on what the person to whom he paid extra bought.

He said "I did not buy a retail copy. It "came" with the computer,
however, it didn't come for free, it came because I ordered it and
paid extra." That makes it very clear to me that he bought it from the
computer's manufacturer, an OEM, and that it's an OEM copy.

Ah, in that case you know that Works 2005 (I think it was) was actually
available as an OEM copy. I did not know whether it was, as could have
been divined from what I said. (Were it the case that it was only
available as Retail, then it would not make any difference whether the
builder was an OEM or not. Even if it _was_ available in both forms, the
builder _could_ have bought a Retail one, though I agree it's unlikely.)

the art of conversation. If we think of the type of conversation television is
helping to kill, our gratitude must be undying. (George Mikes, "How to be

I have the suite on my current computer and am planning on buying a new
machine with Windows 7. I'd like to use the Works CD to install on the new
computer if possible. I've created Word files with that suite, along with
.xlr spreadsheet files, with the latter being my main concern.
MS Office has a works to word converter for download from
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=12

Dunno if Works will install in Win 7, but if it doesn't you could try
installing and running it in compatibility mode for XP (that got me out
of trouble a couple of times) or if you have Win 7 Pro you can set up a
virtual Machine for XP and run it inside the VM (which also got me out
of trouble with some older software). I don't think the Win 7 Home
version has the VM stuff.

According to this wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Works
Works 9 is compatible with Vista, so there's a good chance it'll work
with Windows 7 which is basically Vista done properly.

I should've mentioned, Works 9 is the 2007 version, not the 2005 you seek.
I just tried installing an "old" Works CD from V9 in Windows 8 just now
and that works ok. (with just some light testing, dunno if exhaustive
testing would find anyfink).

My Toshiba laptop came with some version of Microsoft Works, and it runs
Windows 7.

I haven't used Microsoft Works much. except to have a look at it when I found
it on the computer.

For what it's worth, I've found no problems using Works 4 with any
version of Windows after Windows 95.

Bottom line: Works 2005 installed on the new PC with Windows 7. At the end I
had to type in the 25-digit product key from the CD package and it appears
to work OK.

With _some_ Microsoft products, if it's a 25-character key (5 groups of
5), it's a retail; the OEM ones have "OEM" in place of one of the groups
(the second one IIRR).

I don't know if this applies to all MS products though.

(Even if it is retail, of course, you're supposed to uninstall it from
the old machine, unless - highly unlikely - it is one of those licences
that is for up to three [or whatever] machines. Whether Works 2005 was
available in that format, I have no idea.)

I have my original certified version and am using it with windows 7 64 bit
no problem. It loaded easily and this is a different machine from that of a
year ago.
try it and see.

Stewart,
