How to network two computers??

That's interesting, I'd like to know more.
Further investigation shows that LAN sync is faster because the data
doesn't have to travel up to Dropbox's servers and down to the other
computer, but Dropbox still needs an internet connection to initiate the
process.

So I retract my previous remark. You do need to be connected to the
internet. As usual, I've learned something today. :)

For the avoidance of doubt I'll point out that that applies only in the
situation described by the OP, where the computers aren't connected by
LAN. If Dropbox can use a LAN connection, it will, unless you disable
"LAN sync".
Thanks, Mike, I didn't know this either.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but in the OP's case, or anyone else
for that matter, if the OP only has 2 computers, I'm not seeing the
advantage. For the LAN sync to work, won't the two computers have to be
networked in the first case? Or does LAN sync not need a network to
transfer the files?

See my other post retracting the above statement about LAN sync - it
works over the LAN *but* contrary to what I said above, it also needs an
internet connection.

To answer your question, it seems to me possible that LAN sync could
work if the computers were physically connected but Windows hadn't been
configured to allow sharing of files. I think this is the situation
described by the OP.

The OP didn't specify what OS the computers were running but since it was aske
din a Windows 7 newsgroup, I assumed it would be likely to be Windows 7,

Yes, I agree. But what I was objecting to in your post was that you
said "you just set up a Homegroup." You said that as if there was no
other choice, and I was just pointing out the other choice, the one
that I consider to be the better one.

and
the Homegroup is an easy way of doing it for the purposes specified.

Yes, but...

No, a bit more complicated than a homegroup?

Yes, sorry. The second "workgroup" in my sentence was a typo (brain
fart?).

But my point is that the extra complication is very slight and it's
worth it to get the extra flexibility.

Not the only choice, juust the easiest way to do it.

Bit the OP has now said that one is Windows 7 and the other is Vista, which is
more complicated. But apparently the problem has been solved.
