I recently needed to move a large Outlook mailbox to Thunderbird and found that the manual methods were either too slow or didn't preserve the folder structure properly. Since Thunderbird works with MBOX files, the main challenge was converting the PST file into a format that Thunderbird could import without data loss.
One thing I learned is that it's important to check whether the converter supports both ANSI and Unicode PST files, especially if you're dealing with older Outlook data. A preview feature is also useful because it helps confirm that you've selected the correct mailbox before starting the conversion.
In my case, I used DataVare PST to MBOX Converter Expert. It allowed me to preview the PST data, select only the folders I needed, and export them to MBOX format. The folder hierarchy remained intact after conversion, which made the import into Thunderbird much easier. I also liked that I could save the output to a custom location instead of using a fixed destination.
If you're planning a PST to Thunderbird migration, I'd suggest testing the converted MBOX files in Thunderbird before deleting the original PST file. Keeping a backup until you've verified all emails and folders is always a good idea.
