In the Options menu there is a setting to 'Hide Microsoft and
Windows Entries'.
I always use that setting to avoid disasters!

I'm curious to know what entries might be that _are_ Windows but
are _not_ Microsoft.
--

None. But there is Microsoft software that is not Windows, Microsoft
Office for example.
That (None) was my feeling, and thus that 'Hide Microsoft and Windows
Entries' could have been just 'Hide Microsoft Entries'.But at least one poster in this thread has suggested that there might
be Windows entries that _aren't_ Microsoft, from third-party sources.
And two (Dave-UK and I) have suggested that it's the other way around -
Microsoft but not Windows.

Dave-UK gave a valid example...
In which case you're effectively agreeing with me, that 'Hide Microsoft
and Windows Entries' could have omitted the "and Windows" bit.

I. e. it could have just said "Hide Microsoft entries".

But it's not important!

I guess they were trying to be thorough for the naïve user :)

There are two 'hide' entries under the options menu:

Hide Microsoft and Windows Entries.
Hide Windows Entries.

Autoruns is able to distinguish between a Microsoft Windows
entry and any other Microsoft software, like Office or Mail etc.

That means you can filter out Windows entries and monitor Office
entries on their own. You could not do that if there was just
one option, i.e. filter out all Microsoft entries.

click on start, then just below programs there is a text box
type in that
msconfig
start msconfig and select the start tab,
everything that you have installed is in that tab that starts when the comp
starts up,,
, just untick the ones that you do not want to start up on their own when
the comp is started,
simple and safe and no need for third party apps..

Pehaps the question should instead be which entries are Microsft but
are not Windows.

Hello Experts,

There are a number of computer progs that I use occasionally in Win 7
but they always appear with startups and I find it a nuisance.

How to nail them down until I WANT to use them?

TIA
I hate to be too basic but have you:
1. looked into Start > Programs > Startup ?
2. looked at the options in a running program and see if "Run at
Startup" is checked ?
3. looked at Task scheduler and see if a "Run at Startup" is programmed ?

OK Guys.

My aim in this thread was to prevent a Prog1 from starting up every time
I started my computer. That could be any prog.

Irwell suggested http://www.nirsoft.net/ and it was a good start.
After some messing around I used the prog WhatInStartup and tried to
figure it out. On one occasion Prog1 did not appear in the computer
startup and I thought it was just what I wanted. The next time I started
the computer it did appear. Waaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Finally, the only way I could find to stop it was to use the Disable
command in WhatInStartup. I now have a shortcut on my screen and all I
need to do to run Prog 1 is to right click WhatInStartup, go to the
Disabled column, and switch from No to Yes - that disables the Prog 1.

If Prog 1 has a shortcut on the screen, clicking it will start it up
and WhatInStartup automatically changes the Yes to No and Prog 1 can be
used right away.

Prog 1 here is ColorFaxLite :)

May I suggest WinPatrol. With it you can disable any startup program and
Winpatrol will keep it disabled. Many other options availabe in WinPatrol.
Get it here: http://www.billp.com/

Now that you have finally decided to tell us the name of this program, why
can't you start the program and click on Tools and then clear the box
which says ' Start with Windows ' ?

Dave-UK you are the king of the pack :)

That is the simplest by far of the solutions.

If I had a medal to give, it would be yours.

Congratulations!

For future reference, note that you didn't get the right answer until
you gave us the correct name of the program. These things matter, and
you could have had the solution a couple of days ago.

The answer for a different program and problemwill be different.

There is an easier way, try ***CCleaner***
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Works with ALL versions of Windows. We use it at work (I'm the IT
guy) on Win2003 Server, *Win7*, WinXP).

Under [Tools] on the side-bar, there is [Startup] option that allows
you to delete/disable Windows startup items in the Registry or the
User-Startup Menu, AND startups in IE.

The "cleaner" function is a much friendlier GUI for cleaning things
like temp-files, IE cache, MRUs, etc.

ALSO: There is another utility I recommend for Win7 users...

*Ultimate Windows Tweaker* (freeware, Vista & Win7)
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ultimate-windows-tweaker-v2-a-tweak-ui-for-windows-7-vista

This is the equivalent to TweakUI for WinXP.

Although the problem is solved, there are programs out there that are
ill behaved.

One of the behaviors is to insert themselves in the startup sequence
whenever they are run. One I had to deal with was a "helper" program
that checked for a registry entry, and if not present, added it. The
cure was to fool the program by editing the registry entry so that the
program saw it, but the entry did not actually start the program.

Try start.cpl program from Mike Lin

http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Win 7 make sure you run as administrator.

Have used this proggy for years.

Note that some programs as soon as you delete/untick the entry it
immediately puts it back. you may have to either stop that program, or
do your selection in safe mode.

Startupcpl will work with Win 7 ? I used that for years with XP.
