Can Win 7 upgrade be installed on a new hard drive, older computer,
without first installing XP or Vista??? Not trying to cheat MS and you
have you old legal copys of XP or Vista.

You should first run the Windows Upgrade Adviser to make sure the
computer will even run Win 7. If the answer is yes you can do a clean
install. At some point in the installation process you will be asked to
insert a legal copy of XP or Vista into the CD drive for confirmation
that you qualify for the upgrade.

Have you decided what to do about backup drives?

Win 7 Upgrades do not ask for a CD/DVD for confirmation but rather look for
an already activated OS that meets the criteria. However, you can still do a

That's interesting and a change that I was unaware of. In the case of
Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 I had to enter a valid SN for DW8.

This is good news..... it will save me $80 over the cost of a FULL

as mentioned by the others ...yes

but I'm not sure you'd want to install Win7 on an older machine...
you really need some pretty new H/W for it to run right...
and that's assuming you can even get drivers for your older H/W

I wiped my xp partition. Boot from upgrade dvd, but do not put the serial
number in. After install is complete, boot from the dvd this time put the
serial number in.
