Have you uninstalled any beta versions or RC versions of SP1?
I had some grief with sp1 through windows update also.
I downloaded the sp1 and installed it in safe mode.
Windows6.1-----X86.exe is 538.7 MB
Windows6.1-----X64.exe is 903.2 MB
Then I had to run this MS Fixit app to reset the windows update cache:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058
All is now good.

No need, as I stated in my original post I was unable to install the RC
versions, I got the same error.
