Best email program for Win 7?

Are you saying that the message filters don't work using a
Hotmail POP configuration ?

I think what he is saying is that he created multiple extra folders on
Hotmail, and he CAN get his mail in TBird, but it does not create and
populate the many extra folders. Maybe TBird just downloads the inbox? I
haven't used it in years, so I can't remember if it will, or not. The way I
used to get around this issue previously was to disable all my filters
functioning thru Hotmail, so that all the mail goes to the inbox. I then
re-created my extra folders and filters, locally, with my email program of
choice. Hotmail went thru a period of time that made it very difficult to
get your mail unless you were at their site on a browser. It no longer
functions this way.

I tried Windows Live and gave up on it. I don't like the vague blurry
color theme and also it provides no means for locking a folder such
that it can't be inadvertently deleted. Twice, I thought I had a
message highlighted but actually I had the entire Inbox folder
highlighted. When I hit the Shift - Delete keys the whole folder was
trashed.

After the second incident of this I bought a copy of Forte Agent and
have been using it since. I like it MUCH better, and the color scheme
is such that I can easily tell at a glance which item is highlighted.
More importantly, Agent lets me lock files and folders, then they
can't be inadvertently deleted. To delete a file or folder I have to
unlock it first.

"Best" is subjective. What's best for you is whatever suits your
needs. I ended up with Windows Live Mail. I don't exactly like it but
I dislike it less than the others I tried. It was the only one that
sorted my various e-mail accounts into separate folders.

Thunderbird can put your emails into separate folders for each account
or use a global inbox. The default for TBird 2 was to use a global
inbox, and TBird 3 has separate inboxes by default. It's just a matter
of knowing where to look in order to change the default setting.

I didn't like Live Mail either. I have never used OE so I can't
compare them. I've use Agent for both newsgroups and email since 1995
and IMO nothing else compares.

Can Agent send HTML email messages to a browser?

I tried Thunderbird but couldn't get it to work and the people who are
supposed to help are damn snooty and would not explain things. They were
the same when I tried out the web browser a couple of years ago as well.
Windows Live mail takes a bit of getting used to after OE but it is OK for
Usenet and would be fine if the windows could be arranged - I can't imagine
why they didn't allow that as it is a trivial thing to program. ( I must
admit though, after OE it is a big relief not to get 100 spams a day on my
new ISP - don't know how long that will last but the anti spam looks good.)

Windows OE introduced Top Posting which is a pain the arse.

If "johnbee" <[email protected]>" is a valid email address
you will get plenty of spam after using it in a newsgroup, if so I
suggest you change it something like: <[email protected]>

As you will see I use: John Morrison <[email protected]>

I've been around for year or two and still use Eudora for email and
Agent for newsgroups.

I don't use Thunderbird but I welcome you to reply and surely some of
the Thunderbird users will give you heaps of help.

Nothing can send email to a browser, a browser doesn't receive email.
There are web-based email systems like Hotmail, they receive mail and
send it to your browser in the form of an HTML page.

But to your actual question...no, the current version of Agent has no
way to compose an HTML message, either for a Usenet post or for email.
It will properly show HTML messages that it receives. Pegasus
(www.pmail.com) lets you compose rich text messages. It's an email
client with no NNTP capability.

Microsoft has a program called Outlook that many people use. New version
being released with Office 2010.

Yes. I see no reason to combine e-mail and news into one package. They are
so different you end up with compromises. People are trying to turn
Thunderbird into an Eudora replacement. In the Eudora newsgroup they make
it clear there is a long way to go until Thunderbird has all the features
that Eudora has had for years.

That's true with most application but I find Agent does a great job
with both news and email. It files email in any way required and
threads email lists so they look like news. The junk detection in
Agent is so good that it doesn't need filters.

You don't mention this, so I will. At the top right of Windows Live mail
is a brush-looking button, and if clicked on, you can set colours to your
preference. I have no idea why the wishy washy ones are the default.

Wow 16 years and Agent is still has a strong following. Does that not say
something people. It had a strong following as it was being developed. Read
they got it right first off wuth the help of some keen and interest
people/users who gave feedback. Seems like yesterday. Must be getting old.

What can it do that Eudora Pro can't do? Looking at their site I find it
has multiple address books. A useless feature. And a delayed send. Wow.
