This thread has a strange symbol in the thread column of Thunderbird; a
kind of eye as opposed to the usual staircase.
Does anybody else have this?
What does it mean?

Ah, I figured it and changed it.
Watched thread. I must have set it accidentally.

So? Is it that hard to check <http://www.7-zip.org/> from time to time?
Not easy if you have a memory like mine :)

My tendency is to check every time I bring it up, since I don't use it
very often these days.

For Fokke Nauta: There are utilities that claim to keep track of your
installed software and find updates for you. But I've never tried one,
in fact I've never even researched them.

I've had the same problem with Dialog and MesNews. Or is more accurate
to say I've had the same problem you had? :)

Add alt.comp.freeware to your subscriptions. There's a lot of noise, but
once you clear that out (filters), you should see if there's an update
for 7-Zip.

www.FileHippo.com is one that works well for the products it covers. You
can download their update checker.

For Robin and s|b both:

In truth I tend to avoid tools like that and CCleaner, being by nature a
bit paranoid...

That's the reason for my remark above about not even researching update
checking SW.

So I guess I'm just an ingrate - but thanks anyway :)

Thanks, Gene, I know there are.
But most software I have check for their own updates, and for the rest:
why check for updates when it works? Not every update is an improvement ...

Heresy! At least according to the provider of the program :)

I usually accept the updates that are offered, and even, as with 7-Zip,
check on my own and install new updates, but nonetheless, I agree with
you - I'm just inconsistent, apparently.

Yes, me too. It's a dilemma. I try to set them all for don't update, in
order to avoid that start-up delay while they phone home. But I often
end up months and months out of date.
I grit my teeth and stick with it. I often hear from someone else online
that there's a new great update for X, so I get it.

use Secunia to notify you automatically of updates

Well, I never trust updates. I always have them run in an VMWare
environment and see what it is. If I like it, I install in in my
workstation I work with ...
