Windows Update install updates every time I shit down

The "u" and "i" on the keyboard are, unfortunately, very close together, and
maddeningly, OE doesn't spellcheck the subject. Could happen to anyone.
Of course.

But you can't stop some of these people (not me, of course[1]) from
teasing a little.

| Sounds perfectly normal to me. Are you having any problems?

If it's normal to have to install updates three or four times a day every
day then I'll have to turn Windows Update off.
It's only normal until you get caught up.

You can be a lot more proactive about it, you know. You don't have to
wait to be notified of available updates. You can go to the WU site
and get whatever is available. Repeat as often as necessary, until it
tells you that there are no more updates available. Only then are you
fully caught up. Until more updates are released, of course.

If it's just down to a backlog why can't it just install them all instead of
doing 4-5 every time I restart the machine and what's worse, periodically
asking me to restart the machine in order to install yet more.
Why can't it do all the updates at once? Because that would be
horribly inefficient! Why would you want a thousand updates when only
a few dozen apply to your system?

The words "prerequisite" and "interdependency" are your friends here.
Installing certain updates makes you eligible to receive certain other
updates, so out of necessity they need to be installed in a certain
order. Like I said in another post, you can significantly hurry things
along by being more proactive about it. Visit WU as often as it takes,
until you're not offered any more updates. At that point, you're
caught up.
| Turning Windows Update off is usually a bad idea.

I know but if I'm going to have to install several sets of updates per day
every day for the rest of my life unless I disable it, then I'll have to
disable it.
Unless you're very new to Windows, you know it doesn't happen that
way. Things will settle down once you get caught up.

Hi Chris/all

|

| I recently installed a retail Win 7 Ultimate on a new machine. After
| installing
| Win Security Essentials, I went to CP, updates and was presented with 81!
|
| I babysat it, with several required reboots and finally got them all. Took
| at
| least an hour. Now all is quiet. YMMV...

Yes, as you and others indicated it would, it settled down in the end.

Thanks

Dave

Thanks. It's encouraging to have you verify that.
