STUCK ON CHECKING FOR UPDATES!!!!!

After a fresh install of Windows 7, updates will not download. It says checking for updates for hours upon hours. I have encountered this problem with multiple installs on a variety of different manufactures. Sometimes I get lucky and after a few hours, they start to download. i only noticed this happening about 6 months ago. Nothing has changed with the installs that I have been doing. Please help.
