Screen Resolution switches from 1920x1080 to 1680x1050 after every restart.

Hello, and thanks for reading this!

I installed a new 23" Samsung S24B350 display with 1920x1080 native
resolution. Now, everytime I restart the system, the resolution
switches back to 1680x1050, which was the native resolution for the
old original 21" display.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate with all updates applied. My video
adapter is an nVidia GeForce GTX 460 running their newest driver
version 9.18.13.697 dated 10/2/2012. I have completely uninstalled and
reinstalled the nVidia driver, in addition to installing an older
nVidia driver. I have installed the monitor driver (and uninstalled
and reinstalled). I have Googled this problem and tried every
reasonable suggestion I came across. I have switched cables using two
different HDMI, and two different VGA cables. Still, the problem
remains.

It is a major annoyance because every time I restart my Desktop Icons
are all over the place. Any suggestions for a fix would be greatly
appreciated!!!!

Maybe the monitor is defective? If you try a different monitor and the
problem doesn't follow, then you should look into returning the monitor
to the store as a possible solution.

Try setting the size to something different, like 1600x900, and
rebooting. If that sticks, reset it back to 1920x1080 and see if it
sticks now.

Right click on desktop and select screen resolution. Does it say the
resolution with recommended. Or is that off also.

Get a copy of this.

Connect the old monitor, use the utility and collect a direct readout
from the old monitor.

Connect the new monitor, and again collect a direct readout.

It could be, that EDID information is not coming in from the monitor,
and the OS as a result, can't tell the difference between them.

Windows Plug and Play works best, if each hardware device has a
serial number to report in hardware, as that allows each device
to have a unique profile recorded. Evaluate the data you collect,
with an eye towards uniqueness, and whether a proper EDID is
available from both monitors.

(Note: If that utility doesn't run right, you may need to Run As Administrator...)

If the monitors have more than one hardware input (say VGA, DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort),
use only one of those at a time, until your problem is fixed. At least
one user, tries to connect both a VGA cable and a DVI cable at the
same time, from the same video card, and the computer did not
like that. When you're having problems, you should test with just
one flavor of cable connected.

I agree with others that this shouldn't happen! However, as a temporary
patch while you're waiting for the right one, I recommend you get an
icon position remembering utility; they're useful to have for other
reasons (such as having to go to safe mode and then back). I think
iconoid, for example, is fine under 7, and the old reliable EZdesk I
think isn't. (But there are plenty of such utilities.)

Have read all the other suggestions.

In the device manager check to see if it recognises the monitor by name
and model.

If it does not, delete the monitor and either let the device manager
refresh and allow your new monitor to install. If its looking for the
drivers for the new monitor which may not be within the system files,
then install it by the CD that came with the monitor.

Then again you could just install the monitor from the CD supplied with
the monitor.

The system that has to recognise the monitor and you do not have your
particular monitor logged into your system.

Thank you all for the suggestions but nothing so far has helped. The
monitor works fine on another computer and the resolution does not
change upon restart. No matter what I set the resolution to, Win7
remembers it after a restart except when it is set to 1920x1080.

I loaded the software that came with the monitor and the nVidia
control panel sees it as a Samsung SMS24B350, which is correct, but
device manager sees it as a PnP Monitor. I checked Samsung support and
found a newer version of the Samsung Monitor driver. I installed it
but can't restart until tomorrow. I'll post an update when I find out
if that fixed it.

It may turn out that the firmware in the monitor has something in it
that causes the problem. Samsung's "driver" software may be doing
nothing more than telling windows what it should do, rather than relying
on the monitor's reply info.

For some time, most monitors have had the ability to "talk" back to
windows. Microsoft has a "scheme" to over ride the incorrect info from
the monitor using an .inf file. This involves writing and installing a
custom .inf file. (Something that is beyond what I'd want to get into in
this forum. The curious can do a web search using edid as the search
term, and obtain the gory details. A search for EDID utility
found such a utility from nirsoft.net that listed the following for my LCD.

Still no progress. I did notice something though that might give a
clue. When I restart my computer and it gets to the log in/password
screen. the resolution is exactly as it should be, for about 3
seconds.... I know this because when the resolution drops down to
1680x1050, I can see an inch or so of black (blank) on either side of
the screen. After it sits at the login screen for a couple of seconds
(at 1920x1080) the screen then reverts back to 1680x1050. So, this
tells me that something in the registry is lowering the resolution.


Does anyone have a clue as to what is happening during boot just after
the password screen appears - because whatever it is, is causing my
problem.

Any ideas at all????

Have a look in the Nvidia control panel
On the Left hand side there should be 'Adjust desktop size and position'
Try any of the available options such as
'Aspect Ratio'
'Full Screen'
'No Scaling' - probably what you should be on

Well spotted! All you have to do now is enable boot-logging; and then
peruse the log.

I can fully understand your problem.
In a nutshell you're looking for all activity with the video drivers.
You have to;
1. Find out the driver names.
2. Find those names in the log.
3. Find out why they don't stick longer than those few seconds.

An additional place to look; in the Event Viewer.
To make that easier, do this.
1. Shut down.
2. Note time.
3. Boot.
4. Look in Event Viewer system log at all entries from start of boot.

Not easy, I know. It would have been better if someone could have jumped
in with "Oh yes, I've had that, and solved it thus". But no one has.
What makes it additionally frustrating is that a Google search can't hit
it. I would have expected something from something such as "{video name
or driver} screen resolution fail".

Maybe I missed it, but I don't see any proprietary video
drivers in there. Would they show up in a boot log ?

Windows falls back to a VESA driver, if no proper video card
driver is installed. And an OS like Windows 7, also has some
of the necessary proprietary drivers, already installed.

You'd check Device Manager, check under "Display Adapters",
and see if the thing is named (mine says "NVIDIA GeForce 7900").
If it had a more generic description, then, you'd need to
install a proprietary driver.

If it's a laptop, many of those the graphics are fixed to
the motherboard, and if we know the make and model number
of the laptop, we can look up what driver it uses.

On desktops, the video card is replaceable, and could be
just about anything. If you installed your own video card,
we'd need the make and model number off the video card
box, to guess at what driver or web site to visit. In
that case, the driver is provided on a CD that is inside
the video card product box.

To give you two examples of what can happen:

Example#1

I installed WinXP on a machine here, and WinXP happened to have
an ATI driver already in the OS. The video card ran at full
resolution right away, without me adding a third-party driver
right after the install was finished. Only problem was, the
(well-tested) included driver, only made *half* of the video
card work. So it had a pretty serious bug in it. Not a crashing
bug, but when the second half of the card was requested for
acceleration, all the video was processed via a fallback software
path. Needless to say, the screen output was slow as molasses.
That was fixed by going to the ATI site, and getting a newer
driver. Suddenly, both display channels inside the card, were
working, and all operations were accelerated in hardware.

Example#2

I installed Win8 Preview on my second Core2 machine. It has
an unsupported video card in it. Nvidia no longer makes drivers
for FX5200 cards. Win8 used a VESA driver, and the screen
resolution is "stuck at 1024x768". I cannot change the
resolution. This is better than the VESA driver of older OSes,
that use an even lower resolution. The monitor on that computer
is 1440x900, and 1024x768 output looks terrible (fuzzy). This
issue will never be resolved, and I'll need to replace the
graphics card in that machine, to make Windows 8 a candidate OS.

GTX 460 - - I actually have a win 7 64 desktop using that GPU! (And it
no longer has the problem mentioned. I believe that the registry entries
for the card are involved, and the equivalent of an .inf file.

I have also recently had similar problems win a win 7 32 desktop using
ATI video cards in crossfire, in that the drivers show 1920x1080, but
the actual resolution may be less. The problem eventually went away,
at least for the time being. There were multiple driver versions and
installs involved. Crossfire can be a touchy thing to get working, just
to add to the problem!

What is the exact vendor and model of the GTX 460 based video card!

But on Wanda's system, it _does_ run at the desired resolution, briefly;
then drops.

I installed a new 23" Samsung S24B350 display with 1920x1080 native
resolution. Now, everytime I restart the system, the resolution
switches back to 1680x1050, which was the native resolution for the
old original 21" display.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate with all updates applied. My video
adapter is an nVidia GeForce GTX 460 running their newest driver
version 9.18.13.697 dated 10/2/2012. I have completely uninstalled and
reinstalled the nVidia driver, in addition to installing an older
nVidia driver. I have installed the monitor driver (and uninstalled
and reinstalled). I have Googled this problem and tried every
reasonable suggestion I came across. I have switched cables using two
different HDMI, and two different VGA cables. Still, the problem
remains.

It is a major annoyance because every time I restart my Desktop Icons
are all over the place. Any suggestions for a fix would be greatly
appreciated!!!!
