Firefox 6 available

Do you have to call up the check by some arcane method? I just let
it upgrade (to 6, and before that to 5), and at no point was I
aware of anything saying anything like "if you do this upgrade xxx
will stop working - do you want to continue?".
I have all automatic updates turned off. I check for updates by
clicking on Help | About Firefox. When I click the "Update Firefox"
button, I get the message box:

"Incompatible Add-ons Found: Some of your add-ons won't work with this
update, and will be disabled. As soon as they are made compatible,
Firefox will update and re-enable these add-ons"

In Tools, Options, select Advanced, then select Update. In the second
section there, called "When updates to Firefox are found", you'll be
warned about obsolete add-ons if you select the first option, and
you'll also be warned about obsolete add-ons if you select the second
option along with its subordinate option to "Warn me if this will
disable any of my add-ons". However, if you select the second option
but you DON'T select it's subordinate option, then you won't be warned
until afterward.

Has your experience been different?

(I'm using 4.01 at the moment, so the label text that you see may be
slightly different if you're using a different version.)
Looking at my settings (as they are in 6 - I presume carried over), I
have "Automatically download and install the update", and its suboption
"Warn me if this will disable any of my add-ons". I'm pretty certain
this did not happen.

Thanks to the other poster who said that it says something like "this
may disable some of your add-ons". It would be nice if it told you which
ones - in fact that's almost necessary, since you don't know which ones
have become part of the base code (without a lot of research). [Though
I'm pretty certain I didn't even get that warning anyway.]

Hmm. Well, it certainly didn't for me. (Had I known that, for example,
cache viewer would stop working, I'd have held back. [Yes I know that
one's fixed now, though involving a download from a suspicious-sounding
site.])

Maybe it's to do with the way I upgraded - I can't remember which I did,
but there are several ways of upgrading: manually check for upgrades (I
didn't do that one), be told there is one and saying go for it (I
_think_ that's the one I did), just go to the Firefox site and download
anyway, and probably others.

P. S.: I'm doing this under XP not 7 - maybe that's the difference,
though it seems unlikely.

No.
Then I have two suggestions:

1. Clearly label the ones that don't apply to Win 7.

Or, preferably:
DON'T POST THE ONES THAT DON't APPLY TO WIN 7.

Until you make up your mind to do one or the other--PLONK.

Are you saying Firefox behaves differently when you upgrade it depending on
whether you have XP or W7 ?

I have multiple Win 7 systems and multiple XP systems. Firefox
upgrades work exactly the same for me, regardless of the OS.

I updated one of my XP systems today, and though was doing it a bit
carelessly, I'm pretty sure it did NOT tell me some of my add-ons
wouldn't work until after it completed the update. I wish I had another
system to test it on, but it seems that there may be some difference in
the update process. But it is XP vs. Win7, or some other factor?

(a few minutes later...)

I'm now updating Firefox on my Vista system, and it told me one add-on
was not compatible with ver. 6. Then *after* the upgrade, it told me
that three other add-ons weren't compatible.

has been for me.

The notification works for me under XP so that's not it.

Not to hijack the thread, but unfortunately, the add-on that won't
work with FF6 that I care about is the Google Toolbar. Yes, I know I
can change the search provider for the search bar that shows in the
upper-right, it is a few of the other features that the toolbar
provides that I find useful - like showing the search terms and
allowing you to find them in the page by clicking on them, opening
searches in a new tab, etc.

I read that support for the Google Toolbar was actually terminated
after Firefox 4, and the fact that it worked OK with FF5 was just
borrowed time.

Thanks for the (incidental) support: some people were getting quite
stroppy that I was even suggesting it might not!

Yes, I did one on the works machine, and it did warn me. So, as you say,
that's not it. (Though the mix of plugins was different.)

I wouldn't worry, it'll be back - it seems to come as a default addon to
oodles of things, usually with the default set to yes install it. IIRR
the last thing I encountered it in was the latest version of IrfanView
(though I think it's been in that for a few versions).
