WML

Rick

I recently experienced problems with Win7, which led to me having to
reinstall the complete system.

I downloaded and installed Windows Live Mail, which I setup exactly as I
liked it.

However this morning it decided to download and install updates which has
managed to turn my WLM into an absolute pig's ear, it's now completely
different, with horrible icons and even on newsgroups using plain text,
instead of allowing me to paste a normal text URL it now insists on
automatically displaying it as a little attachment box in the toolbar, how
can I get my old version back please, or at least change this mess so that
it resembles something like it did before. TIA

Uninstall it completely; download the same as before and set it up as
you like it; refuse all updates.

I've since completely shut the computer down, rebooted and the URLs are now
appearing as a line of text instead of an attachment, although I would still
like to return WLM to the way it was, I suspect the only answer will be to
completely remove it, download the old version and reinstall it, which I
would prefer not to do if there is an easier way.

Thanks Ed, I did think that was probably the only way and replied to my own
message before I read yours, I did look at the description of the updates
before I downloaded them and there was no mention of WLM at all, believe it
or not there must have been at least 130 updates since I reinstalled it and
the ones today included a service pack so it may have been hidden in there.

IMO the "easier way" is to drop WLM entirely, and use Thunderbird or
some other freeware e-mail client. But if you want WLM as it was, I
think your suspicion is correct.

Good luck,
Wolf K.

Thanks, another problem I've experienced is I have also installed IE9
[Firefox keeps crashing, no longer supports the Google features I like or
Zone alarm] the major problems are that it doesn't start in full screen and
I have to keep maximising the window.
It also won't remember passwords, although a popup appears giving me the
option which I always click 'yes' to, however the next day they have
disappeared, I've gone through all of the procedures including ones
suggested on Microsoft forums, such as installing and running 'history
eraser' resetting the browser and ticking the required boxes in the
'Internet Options' menu but nothing appears to work in the long term.

Right click on the icon, Properties/ Short Cut tab; and change the Run
box to "maximised".

Passwords are stored in Cookies. Are you sure you're not running some
clean-up utility that's erasing them?

It sounds as if your Firefox has a major problem; from which you will
get all kinds of minor side-effects.
The latest version is 12.0 (at least it was 5 minutes ago when I
checked). Try that and see what happens.

Another thing to do for Firefox; update add-ons.
You click Tools, Add-ons; and then the little arrow to the right of the
little cog-wheel top centre, check for updates.
I just did and found lots.

No way exists to revert to an earlier version but completely remove and
reinstall the earlier version.

That works fine on the homepage, however on my desktop I have a number of
shortcuts to various online newspapers, unfortunately they still have the
problem and there is no similar option available in properties as as with
the IE icon.

Rick, you want the 2009 version. Follow the link in Winston's post.

Who was it who said that you can lead a horse to water but not make it
drink?
Probably Shakespeare.
Anyway, I think the nitty-gritty of that little maxim is that it takes a
degree of cooperation from the led beast.

Open IE, resize the window, hold the CTRL key and press X.

Probably Shakespeare.

I don't know who first said it, but I don't think it was Shakespeare.

But I do know who, when challenged to use the word "horticulture" in a
sentence, said "You can lead a whore to culture but you can't make her
think."

It was Dorothy Parker.

Ah, ah. She might have proved a worthy rival for the bard himself in his
day!
