Windows Disk Management: Creating Partitions?

I have a question - A volume is displayed as a horizontal bar with a drive letter (or none if formatted). If I create a partition on the volume it is created on the far left side of the horizontal bar. Here is the question: Is the partition on the left side of the horizontal bar the inside or outside of the physical platter?

You do realize hard drives are made of several platters, not just one? But anyway, they start at the outside and go in.

Yes - I do realize HDs are made of multiple platters. Anyway, thanks for the info.
