Hi

I am running Win7 64 with a 512mb video card and a motherboard that supports a maximum of 8GB of memory. I have 6GB RAM but the system only recognises 5.5GB as .5 GB is system reserved. Although I have long accepted that since installing Win7 I now have to replace the video card as it over heated (not to breaking point but high performance is effected - thank you ARMA2 and nvidia 196.75 drivers).

Anyway I am thinking about replacing the video card with a 1GB model, question is will that reduce usable RAM further? If so I'll stick with a 512mb model.

ps anyone want a partially disabled 9800gt??

The system reserved memory has nothing to do with the video card, since it has its own memory. Only if it was a laptop would that be an issue.

Windows 7 is reserving the memory for some other function. Go ahead and get your 1GB video card.

No thanks on the nVidia card, I use only ATI Radeon cards these days.

Maybe you should get one too.

Thanks for the useful advice. Wraps it up nicely. I'll consider ATI Radeon.
