Transfering music to a phone.

I tried a few times to share a folder over the network on my Win7
machine. I never could manage to share a folder that could be read by
my XP machine. It is OK though as the drive I want to share is on the
XP machine.

I now have a Fusion U8652 phone and I want to copy music from the XP
folder to the phone using my Win7 machine. I use the my Win7 machine
all the time to access the XP machine and I can play music from the
folder just fine using VLC.

The phone instructions say to use Media Player
http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB412301#fbid=88VfZgZrGnz
I added my networked music folder to WMP play list.

I got these error messages:

I am guessing that I have to change a network setting to be able to
copy the music to the phone. I have the phone plugged into the USB
slot on the Win7 machine, but no "device installed" message from Win7.

Why do people always choose the complex way? If your phone has a card
slot, just remove the card, copy your music to the card using your
computer and Bob's your uncle, as they say! Personally I use my phone as
a phone and listen to music on my Olympus recorder thus not wasting away
my phone battery juice and getting hi-fi quality sounds listening
through decent in my case top end earphones.

Or am I behind the times?--

OK, so if I understand what you're doing (and I might not), you have two
possibilities.

1) Place a share from WinXP machine inside Music Library.
Attempt to copy something from Music Library to phone, and for
some reason this fails.

2) Mount WinXP share separately. Explore it, without
involving a Library at all. Can you copy directly from
the share, to the phone ?

The usage of Media Player, would be to get an MTP driver.
Which suggests your phone uses MTP for file transfer, rather than
USB Mass Storage. MTP adds the capability to enforce DRM,
prevent copying files marked as "do not copy" and so on.
In other words, MTP is the anti-consumer version of
file transfer methods. But since MTP devices don't typically
offer the user options, you're stuck with it.

I have no idea why (1) is failing, unless the attempt to do (1)
is trying to do a "move" instead of a "copy" or something.
A "move" implies deletion on the source device, whereas
on a "copy", the source isn't touched. Perhaps the permissions
of your setup, have something to do with it.

Get one then! When I built my latest desktop, I made sure I had a card
reader to install on it even though I had an external card reader
already. The built in card reader cost me £10 to buy and if I use my new
desktop for 5 years, the cost of the built in card reader will be £2/pa
or US$3/pa. I consider that money well spent.

Why go to all that trouble when you can do the job far easier with a
card reader, be it external or built in?

Use the bloody Windows Explorer. Open one copy on the LHS and the other
on the RHS of the screen, browse to the relative folders and drag and
drop all the files you want. The opposite of easier said than done. Yes,
it *is* easier to do than to explain. You can grab and drop or copy and
paste or cut and paste as many files as you want in one swift move.
Learn to use the CTRL and/or the SHIFT keys to select folders. You only
have to learn how to use such procedures once, you know!. --

I would like to be able to copy the files straight to the phone, but I
am still not sure Win7 is even detecting the phone. (It doesn't show
up as a drive letter) I just got the phone and there is no software
disk with it. Most devices I plug into Win7 pop up with a hardware
detect. Nothing happens when I plug the phone in.

The phone is a prepaid smart phone. I bought it with the idea that if
I ever needed GPS or had to send an email, I could, but the purpose
was to only use the phone for short calls and emergency. (I never
expect to even send a text or email)

I also have a couple of health related text files I would like to copy
to the phone. One of the apps listed in the phone says "documents".
When I pick that app I get a license agreement. I suspect that these
apps are geared toward data use. ATT wants to sell me data instead of
letting me get it from the USB port. I currently did not subscribe to
the data package so I could find out what I could and couldn't do
without it.

I expected to have a phone, camera, ebook and mp3 player to use as a
waiting room toy without having to pay for a data package. (BTW I
asked these questions before I ordered the phone and the girl on the
ATT chat said I could) I asked for a online manual and got this link:
http://www.att.com/devicehowto/? I never was able to find a PDF of
the manual.

I don't see how having to take the card out of my phone would be any
easier than just using a USB port. (Except for the part where my USB
port is not working) :)

Problem solved. After rebooting my computer and using a USB port in

You neglected to say what the phone's OS is, but Google says it might be
an Android phone (and *yes*, it matters). On that assumption, I give you
this:

When you plug the phone into the USB port, pull down the phone's
Notification bar and choose the connection settings, where you can
choose "Connect the phone as a mass storage device".

The above terms might not match your phones's dialog exactly, since
phones vary, so use your imagination.

I usually tell Windows to disconnect the phone, and I reselect "Charge
only" after that, before unplugging the phone.

On that assumption, I give you this:
If it *is* an Android phone, with Wi-Fi (and the reviews say it
is both)......

I'd say install ES File Explorer (free) on the phone and use
that to browse the shares directly on the phone and not bother
with the USB anyway.

I'd also recommend ES TaskManager too, also free.

Hi,
Problem solved.
Glad your problem is solved. Just in case you (or anyone else) are
wondering if there is any cable-less solution, the following are what I have
for my Android Tablet (Moto XOOM) and as far as I know, many of these
utilities are also used and compatible with Android phones:

(1) To download files from a Win. 7 system with its build-in FTP or other
FTP servers: AndFTP (free) is a nice one.

(2) FTP Server for other FTP clients to download from your phone or tablet:
FTP Server by The Olive Tree (free) is also nice.

(3) Websharing (by NextAPP, paid??) is a web-based folder sharing utility,
so you could use a browser to access the shared folders.

Hope this helps.

I love Filezilla Server (and it's associated client)

I like File Expert (although I don't have much experience with anything
else, so I'll check out your suggestion.) It's got an FTP client,
server, and a SMB server and browser, and some other handy features.

Or you could upload your files from your Windows computer to your

Android phone. Probably terribly slow if you have lots of files
to move.

I have checked out both of your suggestion, and File Expert, as you
mentioned, got plenty of features. I think it will keep me busy for a
while, LOL.

Thanks :)
