Thunderbird on W-7

Once again I tried TB on W-7 and it can't connect to the email or NSP
servers. How are you people using TB on W-7 getting it to connect to the
servers?

What's a "NSP"?

I don't use Thunderbird regularly, but it works just fine when I do. I
don't do anything special, just set up my account like I do with any
other email client.

The only thing is, that if your mail provider uses non-standard ports
you will have to edit those manually in the mail server settings dialog.
Otherwise TBird works just fine with all POP mail servers...

"can't connect". Uh huh. It gave you that exact error message? I
don't think so.

The newsgroups for Tbird are under the mozilla.* hierarchy. If your NSP
doesn't carry the mozilla.* groups then connect to their NNTP server at:

news.mozilla.org

I have TH running on tons of W7 computers. Works well.

The obvious is that you do not have it configured correctly.
Check with your ISP as to proper configuration.

More subtle, you may have blocked the program with your
Antivirus/firewall. I simple test is to temporarily
disable your AV/firewall and try out Thunderbird.

before...
You would if you went to any of the groups concerning NSPs. That's where I
got it from.

Yes, I got to download and send email but there's a problen with subscribing
to newsgroups. I finally connected to my NSP's server and the list comes
down.... but I can't subscribe to anything. As soon as I start to type in
say, alt.windows7.general, the list in the window below vanishes. It doesn't
matter what NG I type it, the wondow goes blank. IOW's it's showing that
datemas.de carries *NO* NGs at all despite the list, and of course on Vista
I use datemas.de all the time.

I have email working on TB, now I need to see why I can't subscribe to any
NGs even though TB connects to my favorite NSP, datemas.de. On WM,
thousands of groups show to select from. It takes seconds to sub. In TB, a
lot less show in the window with no way to sub' to any of them.

Are you able to subscribe to news.mozilla.org?

This will get you mozilla.support.thunderbird.

Sounds like an issue with datemas.de and Thunderbird. There
are a lot of great guys over on mozilla.support.thunderbird
that may be able to help you. I am stumped. Try reposting
over there.

I think I have it now. Thanks for all the help and information. ;-)

Yes, I was able to subscribe to news.mozilla.org.

What's a "NSP"?
ISP = Internet Service Provider

NSP = News[groups] Service Provider
I've been on Usenet since the 1980s, and I've never seen "NSP". They
are "news servers".
I'm surprised by that. I've been on Usenet since 1984 and I thought
NSP was a common acronym. I see it frequently, although now that I
think about it it's mostly in the NSP support forums. I've also
frequently seen it in alt.binaries.usenet-server-comparison (before
that group became such a cesspool) as well as groups dedicated to my
ISP's over the years.

Actually that's Northern States Power.
Or even "Network Service Provider".

At least that one is sort of in context, but I never heard of "News
Service Provider" either - OTOH, I've only been reading newsgroups
since 1985 or thereabouts, so I probably don't know anything :)

By correctly entering the required information for each server in
account settings. If you're not going to tell us which email or
newsgroup servers you are trying to connect to, then we can't be of much
more help.

It's a bug in Thunderbird. When you try to search for a newsgroup and
you use the full name for that group it doesn't show. But if you were
to leave off the first letter of the name, it shows. For example if you
were to search for this.news.group it would not show it, but if you
searched for his.news.group it would if it really existed.

That's part of the game "she" plays - withholding important information
until repeatedly begged for it. The next step is to moan about why all
suggestions don't work for "her", revealing more previously unmentioned
details. It's the "Why Don't You, Yes But" game, designed to ensnare
naive sympathetic readers, and draw the conversation out to great
lengths.
