Threads are not holding messages in order

What could be the reason for threads not holding messages in proper order?

Hi, McCorkindale.

What, in your opinion, is the "proper order"?

WLM 2011 did change its order of listing messages, and it does take some
getting used to. But after using it for several months, I've come to
appreciate the new order - somewhat. My appreciation varies, depending
largely on how many unread (by me) messages are in the newsgroup, and how
frequently I revisit the NG and update the list. We all have different
practices and habits for how we read NGs, and most of us - like myself -
change those ways of reading from day to day, or at least occasionally, so
the same method does not satisfy everybody - or satisfy me every day.

WLM 2011 now lists messages by the date/time they were Sent, when we sort on
the Sent column, either Ascending or Descending. This produces the order
that most of expect when we view all messages individually, just as it
always did. But when we group them by Conversation (thread), the behavior
has changed.

Now it lists threads by the date/time of the latest message in the thread.
Thus, a thread started on April 1 that has a new post on May 1 will be
sorted as a May 1 conversation. A thread started on April 15 with the
latest post on April 30 will be sorted as earlier than that April 1 thread,
even though it was started later, because the LATEST message is earlier than
in the other thread.

Since I typically download all messages (or at least, all New messages) in a
NG and then start reading at the top (newest), my Sent column today in this
NG starts with threads started on 5/12/2011 (this thread), 5/9, 5/11/,
5/7... The start dates are out of order, but each of those threads has a
new message Sent today, 5/12. And the latest post in the 5/7 thread was at
6:47 AM; the latest post in the 5/11 thread was at 7:06 AM, so that thread
is "newer" than the one started 5 days later.

After using the new system for a while, I kind of like it. Since I stay
pretty current with my subscribed NGs, each time I revisit one, all threads
with new posts today or yesterday are at the top of my list, sorted by Sent
with the newest first. ;<) I read the first message, then use Ctrl+U to go
to the Next Unread message - "lather, rinse, repeat" until I've read all new
messages. Then Ctrl+J to go to the next NG with unread messages. (I've
programmed 2 buttons on my mouse to be Ctrl+U and Ctrl+J in WLM, so this is
mostly a one-thumb routine.)

IOW they've gone to an upside-down arrangement.
(or maybe they're closet LIFO accountants)

Fine for pineapple-cake but a bit disconcerting if you're more of a
read-things-in-order top-down sort of person -- and this has been encouraged
& reinforced by teachers, lists, & even s/w over the years.

One gets used to these things after a while.
I just have to (try to) consider it part of my keep-brain-fit program. Who
needs crossword puzzles!?!

The only comforting thought is that some day the yunguns putting us through
these upheavals will themselves have senior-eyes, & the established habits
that they have developed over a lifetime will in turn be upset by a new
generation of yunguns (who themselves don't believe they'll ever be like
*that*.)

Hi, bj.

Ever hear of the inventory method called "LAFO"? Neither LIFO nor FIFO, but
"Let the Agent Figure it Out". ;^}

I agree with just about everything you said, especially the senior eyes.

When I find a NEW newsgroup, one that just got started (like this one - when
Microsoft decided that it would not host a Win7 NG on its own public news
server), I start at the beginning and work my way forward. But sooner or
later, I get interrupted and the messages get waay ahead of me. Or I'll
have a computer problem of some kind and have to start over. Or I'll
discover a new-to-me newsgroup that already has thousands of posts. I could
just use Catch Up, but I'm too stubborn for that. So that's when I'll
switch the Sent column to Descending and try to stay up with the new
traffic. But I don't delete the old posts (intentionally - sometimes it
happens accidentally). I always think that I will read them some day when I
get A Round TUIT. ;^} (I currently show 38,457 unread here.)

I've always been pretty adaptable. As I've said in several messages about
different "features" of WLM 2011, I've learned to like some of them and
resigned to live with the rest. I stepped onto this learning curve long
before I could walk and I expect to continue learning for as long as I live.
The world will not adapt to me, so I must learn to live with the parts that
I cannot change.

Looks like you are using a recent version of Windows
Live Mail which doesn't work properly with usenet.
Try installing a more suitable newsgroup reader application.

Thank you for your contribution to my enlightenment .
Indeed, I'm using the most recent version of WLM.
My fault...-;)
But this my "experimental" copy of HDD, before I reinstall Win 7 again.
There is a lot of irritating elements in this "recent version of Windows".
but... can we do something about it ? No, nothing....
Thanks.

No but I like it. I'm sure that we had some lively swear words when I took
accounting in college & sweated the practice sets (in the pencil & eraser
era.) Somehow I don't think LTFO (let teacher figure out) would have gone
over too well. :)

I too have a ton of unread messages in various groups that I occasionally
get around to poking into.

Too bad you can't just throw plastic at the Round Tuit Store. :)
