strange file saving

M

MZB

I'm not sure if this is a W-7 problem, but I do not have this problem on
my other XP computers.

On my W-7 computer (and my others) I use MS Works 4.5.

Anyway, when I load a word processing file (extension .wps) in Works and
then save it to a DIFFERENT directory, it always appends a .doc to it.
So if the file was test.wps it now becomes test.wps.doc

This will not happen if I just SAVE the file to the same directory. But
when I do SaveAS to a different directory it happens. It does not do
this with a spreadsheet (ie:: a .wks extension). Any ideas?

For most programs, the Save As dialog includes a way to specify the
saved file type. Frequently, the Save As Type selection is made below
the area where you select the location and specify the filename.

I didn't explain that very well and I don't have Works in front of me,
but 99% of other MS programs work that way, so it seems like a safe
bet.

When you save as, there should be a "Save as type" line at the bottom of
the dialog box. Set that to .wps and you should be fine.

Almost every program that has "Save as" has that feature.

Hi, MZB.

For the past few versions of Windows - I thought it included WinXP, but
maybe not - many apps add their own extension when saving a file. So Word
and Excel, for example, have been adding .doc and .xls for years. This
saves us from having to remember which extension to use for each
application. But there are a couple of ways to avoid this automatic
extension.

Gene mentioned one way, which is to "Save as [a specific file] type", so
that the normal extension for THAT type gets added.

The other way is to enclose your filename - including the extension of your
choice - in "double-quotes"; then the program will respect your choice of
name, including the extension.

Remember that each filename has only ONE (or no) extension. So for a
filename like test.wps.doc, the extension is only .doc; the .wps is
considered a part of the filename, not the extension, because the extension
comes only after the LAST period in the name. That's why it was such a dumb
idea for Windows to "Hide extensions for known file types" by default, and
that's one of the first changes many of us make whenever we (re-)install
Windows. There is a very real danger that malware will be accepted by a
user who is unaware that the innocent test.txt filename that he sees listed
is actually test.txt.vba, with the .vba Visual Basic extension hidden by
Windows - and that the VB Application will do unexpected malicious things to
the computer.

(There are several ways to reach the screen to change the Hide extensions...
option. One is to click Start | Control Panel | Folder options | View tab.)

That's the application, not Windows making that choice. If you work
through the Options or Preferences in the menu you should be able to
find a setting for how files are saved.

Every application is different. But for the sake of an example, in
Word 2010 it's File » Options » Save » Save files in this format.

Finding and setting the option is more convenient. But if you can't
find it, you can still control the Save As for each individual file
by changing the "Save as type" setting, located in the Save As dialog
immediately below "File name".

File extensions go back to the beginnings of DOS and earlier.
Definitely not anything new.

When you double-click on a file in Windows Explorer, the OS gets the
file's extension and looks it up in the registry. There it finds
details about which program it should use to open the file and how it
should invoke it. If there's no extension, the OS will not be able to
open the file for you.
