I can't answer your question regarding "Open with." I put a shortcut to
7-Zip in my "SendTo" folder. That works for me.

Hi, Maurizio.

In 7-Zip's options, there is a whole screen where you can select
which file types open with 7zip: Tools » Options » System. I suggest
you use that; then you can open the files with 7-zip simply by
double-clicking them.

Also in the Options dialog, you will probably want to check some of
the boxes on the 7-Zip tab. Those create menu entries for when you
right-click on files, so that you can add them to archives without
explicitly opening 7-Zip.

the problem is that happens to me also with other portable exe files.
Curiosly, I liked to know what's the problem.

This is one of several things which worked better in XP than it does in
Win7.

I have had 7-Zip installed for ages, and simply use the right-click menu
to open its many options when I have a zip file I want to deal with. I
just looked in Control Panel | Default Programs | Set associations to
see what ".zip" is associated with. Amazingly enough, it doesn't appear
in the list at all! Maybe it's because there is a built-in utility in
Windows Explorer to deal with zip files.

I haven't bothered trying to set an association using "Open with". IME
that often plays up. You could try associating *.zip with anything
(even Word!), and then using Control Panel "Set associations" to change
whatever you associated *.zip with to 7-Zip.

You could also try downloading and running FileTypesMan
(http://www.nirsoft.net) to see if that helps.

Hi,
I experienced the same problem with several Windows portable apps and after
much experimenting finally found the answer to the problem. I don't know if
all portable apps do the following but some sure do, and that is write their
version number to the registry. So before you try the problem app again
search for the old version number in the registry and if you find it just
manually replace the number with the new version number. After you do that
select the open with program and it should work OK.

That works. I just added "Open with 7-Zip" to my context menu for .zip
files using FileTypesMan and the PortableApps version of 7-Zip. Since I
have FileTypesMan, I've never tried setting up the inherent Windows
"Open with" option, but I don't think it works with portable apps.
