Problem with Cookies

I recently encountered a problem logging on to a website where I
typically enter the first letter of my username and the password comes
up automatically. I tried it today and have to enter the username and
password all lover again but there is a message that says "Cookies
must be enabled to use this website. Please check your browser
settings if you experience difficulty." I have enabled ALL cookies but
I still cannot get this website access unless I type in both username
& PW. Note that I recently had an occasion to clear the "browsing
history" but did NOT check to clear Internet External Files, cookies,
and history! Did I do something wrong here?

With Windows, settings sometimes fail to stick, or become unstuck
without a corresponding change in the settings window. Uncheck Enable
Cookies, restart the browser and check Enable Cookies, restart the
browser. This works surprisingly often.

Good luck,

Hi Wolf,

Thanks for your reply! Unfortunately, the process did not work this
time! I tried logging in to another frequently-used site and had to
re-enter both username & PW. The I logged-off and logged-on again.
This time it remembered my username and all I had to do was enter my
PW. So, it appears that the problem is unique to this one site. I have
contacted their technical support and am awaiting their reply. Any
suggestions in the interim? Thanks.

You don't say whether you're using Firefox or Internet Explorer. With
FF, you can view the page info, and it will tell you what passwords you
have saved for that page. I've had to delete the saved password for a
page and replace it on odd occasions.

I can't find a similar function in IE, but I don't use it unless a page
fails to work with FF. In either case, stored passwords are kept on your
machine, called from the webpage, so it's possible the page source code
has been changed so that the username and password boxes no longer call
the local values. There's one site I use regularly that uses a locally
stored username, but won't use the locally stored password.

Hi John,

I'm using IE. Never had any problem until I had to clear the "browser
history" but still waiting for a reply from the site's tech support
people!
