Problem burning CD from an image file.

P

Peter Jason

I have Win7 SP1.

I downloaded an image file from the Internet.

I have used Nero 8 to burn this to a CD.

The burning occurs OK, and the disk has been used
up (Windows Explorer), but any data is invisible
and all Explorer shows in a "Configuration File"
with the text contents:
[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21815

The log report from Nero8 is as follows:

Did you close the burning session in Nero? If it was left open to
accept more files then you can't read from it yet. I'm not talking
about finalizing a CD which means no more can be written onto it. I'm
talking about closing your burning session. If the session isn't
closed, more files can be added (written) during that session. You
cannot access those files until you close the burn session. Some burner
programs let you leave the session open because you have more files to
add later. Before you can use that disc, you have to use the burn
software to close the still-open session. You can have multiple
sessions on the disc (before you finalize it) but each has to be closed.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Close-or-finalize-a-CD-or-DVD
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Disc-burning-frequently-asked-questions

View the disc in Nero to see if the last session is open or closed. I
have never burned files onto a disc without also closing that burn
session so I can't tell you where in Nero to do it. Also, I'm still
back on Nero 6.6 so your Nero 8 might have different menu or option
navigation. If there isn't an obvious "Close session" option when it
sees an open session, burn another couple files into the open session
and make sure this time the "close session" option is enabled during
that burn session.

If there is a problem writing the lead-out then the session didn't get
closed; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_disc_authoring#Lead-Out.
You'll have to use another disc. The last one is bad. Figure 5% of
your discs will fail to burn correctly.

Are you able to check the md5sum/sha1sum of the image you downloaded to
the source?

What if you mount the image using (e.g.) winCDemu?

Did you verify after burning?

TMPGEnc.Authoring.Works.4.0.12.42 seems to work quite well. Who told you to use
nero? Another good question is why did someone tell you to use nero? Get rid of
nero and use Revo Uninstaller Pro to get completely rid of it.

Note: I am one of the world's foremost authorities on software for dvd and
blu-ray writers.

I have Win7 SP1.

I downloaded an image file from the Internet.
What do you mean by "image file"? ISO?

Is the file itself okay? I don't just mean whether it was downloaded
without errors, though that's a consideration, but whether it was
created without errors.
I have used Nero 8 to burn this to a CD.

The burning occurs OK, and the disk has been used
up (Windows Explorer), but any data is invisible
and all Explorer shows in a "Configuration File"
with the text contents:
[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21815

Why can I not read any data?

TMPGEnc.Authoring.Works.4.0.12.42 seems to work quite well. Who
told you to use nero? Another good question is why did someone
tell you to use nero? Get rid of nero and use Revo Uninstaller Pro
to get completely rid of it.

Note: I am one of the world's foremost authorities on software for
dvd and blu-ray writers.
If you were and actual "authority" you wouldn't be recommending a $100
video authoring tool for burning ISO files of what is probably a data
disk that can be dealt with with several free or inexpensive programs.

What's the opposite of "authority"?

Buffer overruns are minimal with that program. A lot of software is bad
when using dual layer dvd's or dual layer blu-ray blanks. This program
recorded one of the highest success rates using various dvd and blu-ray
rewriters.

If all else fails use isobuster or Alcohol 120% or something similar to extract
the files then burn them as data.

[deleted] seems to work quite well.

Note: I am one of the world's foremost authorities on software for

If you were and actual "authority" you wouldn't be recommending a $100

What's the opposite of "authority"?

I'm tempted to crosspost this to alt.usage.english. :)

FWIW, I have used ImgBurn to burn ISOs and back up data for longer
than I can remember, and I've never had a problem. ImgBurn is free.
When you install it, it adds itself to the right-click menu for .ISO
types, so you don't have to do anything but right-click the
downloaded file and select "Burn using ImgBurn".

I suspect Peter has nailed it, and you burned the ISO file as a data
file rather than as a disk image. Fortunately, disks are cheap. :)
