OT How do I start a BLOG

B

BeeJ

OK, so there are too many stupid blogs but I sometimes have the urge to
purge. I guess I could do a YouTube or similar but who wants to see my
ugly mug? Anyway, there is no spell checker for video. lol

Do I need to start my own webpage?
I want it more public than facebook and have no requirements for anyone
to join anything to see the blog. I have a facebook account and think
it is too much trouble to use. (so how do I delete my facebook
account?).

Is Google+ (circles within circles aka wheels within wheels) open to
view without any membership?

I can let people know about the blog on facebook or google+ or
whatever. (self advertising).

Anyway, I would post useful info not just diatribes or tripe.
I have written a book or two and would post for free consumption.
Most people would like what I wrote (photography).
Maybe a few diatribes and a little tripe too.

So if I want to start my own website, what are suggested for ISP etc?
e.g. 1&1 ? Others. Something cheap with lots of storage.

Where else might I post this to get the best response?
Thanks.

[etc]

Search on "create a blog". If you use Duckduck as the search engine,
you'll get lot of different links. I used blogger (by Google), you'll
get a [something].blogpsot.com as your webpage. See below my sig. It's
free. Tumblr is also quite popular. There are many other blogging services.

There are also web-hosting services that will host your website for an
annual fee. Your ISP may already include this service. There are also
free ones, but these will clutter up your blog with ads.

It will take a while to build up any kind of following, and you may
never get beyond a few dozen regular followers (most of which not
officially follow you, just check in from time to time.) You also need
to update your blog fairly often, which can seem like a drag
occasionally. I speak from experience. ;-)

Anyhow, just plunge right in. You can always just stop.... ;-)

I second (or third) the vote for wordpress.com. I tried blogger and it was
okay except for one thing: My sister reads my blogs and wanted to comment on
one I wrote about our Dad. She couldn't do that because she doesn't have any
social networking accounts and would have been forced to join something to
comment. I want folks to comment (I know: suicidal) without any obligation. I
moved everything to wordpress, where comments can be made without signing up
for anything.

I also like the formatting options in wordpress a little better. I ended up
paying something like $30 for the ability to customize my page, but that
isn't necessary; there are lots of templates to pick from.

I haven't opted for the $99 add-on; don't need what it offers.

Have you checked to see whether your ISP account includes any free
webspace? It used to be the case that most did (in UK at least), though
sometimes pitifully small by today's standards (few MB!), but I think it
isn't so now. (And the commentability was minimal too.)
