No sound at all in Windows 7

G

Grenou

My new Windows 7 computer is a week old.
Instead of being fun fun fun, it's giving me a lot of grief.

The one I am trying to sort out at the moment, without any luck, is the lack
of sound.
No sound whatsoever.
I even bought a new speaker system yesterday.
Still no sound.
The speakers work very well on the laptop.

I tried to update the driver, but the Realtek driver is the latest, so the
Device Manager tells me.

I am cross-eyed Googling for a solution, there are many people without sound
in W7 ..
Most are self-builds, upgrades, and such. I didn't see any posts anywhere
about a shiny new machine that is silent.
I contacted CyberPower Systems, where I bought the machine, no solution
there.

I tried to disable the sound in the BIOS, but I can't find where to do that.
Looked for Sound or Audio, but there is nothing.

If anyone has a solution, I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance.

Did you update the driver from the PC manufacturer's site, the MB
manufacturer's site (since it's basically a home-build, not a Dell, HP,
etc.), or from Realtek? If you open Device Manager, are there any red or
yellow icons?

If only.

I bought and loaded W7 on my old computer and had the same problem.

All the plugs are in the right holes :)

I let the Device Manager find a newer driver, but it said it already
contained the laste version.

There are no marks telling me there is anything wrong.
Realtek High Definition Audio : "This Device is working properly".

Right click on the speaker icon in lower right
select Playback devices
What are your options in the Playback Tab, You should have at least
speakers, and would usually have that as default.

Not to be silly, but the last time my speakers didn't work, when I checked
the hook-up, I found I had forgotten to plug it in in my power strip.
You do have the volume control turned up to say 8%-10%?
In Win-7's control panel under sound do you have Speakers/HP [that's what
mine say] checked as the default? One time I had SPDIF-Out checked by
accident and I had no sound.
These are some of the silly things I had to contend with because I didn't
know better.[I have learned though]

Well if the computer is new

would it not be covered under warranty?

or did you build it yourself?

Right!

On my last laptop, the sound driver (SigmaTel) would every so often error
and then no audio until I reinstalled it and restarted.

It's also true that the various things that can be set wrong are in
various places that you might not see at a glance...

For instance, somewhere in the sound set up stuff is a check box to
show disabled devices - which remain invisible until that box is
checked.

Is that cool, or what?

I'd start with warranty.
That sound is muted or set to a very low volume setting is my first thought.
Just bought a powered speaker system myself, no sound, needed to
put battery in the remote, then hold down volume + for a short while,
bingo, up came the sound. Nice feature, don't have to go into
Win7 volume slider, good woofer to boot, and bass +/- on remote.
Some audio player utils show a small graphic equaliser display, with the
levels jigging up/down. Would show that it is processing an audio file
even if not delivering it.
If it is processing audio and it is not coming out then warranty is your
best bet, could be a dead audio chip, connection displaced in trandit,
transit damage from being thrown across a loading bay and landing on
the floor. Quite easy to cause a hairline crack without any obvious
eaterior damage.
If it is Win7 or Vista you can view system events, can be very useful
and revealing.
Like system seem to be running fine, but sys event logs full of warnings
and errors.

It is, but if I can solve the problem myself instead of having to send it
back, that would be a lot more convenient :)

In 'Sound' the Realtek Digital Output is the default, not speakers.
Which seems odd. I didn't tick or un-tick anything :)

You're not being silly, it's the first thing I checked ;-)

Plugging in the necessaries isn't rocket-science, but easily overlooked.
I looked at the SPDIF, but didn't adjust anything there.
I have turned up the volume, although Sony say not to have it turned too
high.
I can't judge if it is too high, but hope that will happen soon!

From what I've been reading in the newsgroups and forums sound problems with
Windows 7 are the most prevalent.

My problem was solved after long testing by going to the makers of the sound
card and downloading the correct driver.

I think Msoft is not good at the sound card drivers and the generic drivers
or sound are not very good.

Think we were thrown by the original post which said
It's a familiar story, MS say "We don't write drivers. That's the mfrs.
responsibility."
Mfrs. say "We don't write drivers for hardware we no longer sell, or is not
in current production" so it ends up in landfill with each new MS OS.

Since searching for drivers is a right pain in the butt, and for Win7 there
are some 20 new drivers a month, many being Realtek, it is worth
investing in a driver update utility. That way you get the latest, and
it is matched to your hardware, along with a roll back option, if a
new driver makes things go pear shaped.
For applications there is a free CNET Tech Tracker that reports if
any of your apps are out of date, though most apps. have a
check for updates feature.
With todays large HD's a backup system is strongly advised,
you can't rely on system rollback if it won't boot because of
hardware failure, and return to base warranty is probably return
without your folders and files.
With an image, 5 mins later, you are back as you were.

I was hoping that you would come up with the answer to my woes,.. any idea
what could stop the sound not appearing?

I have also posted my tale of woe on the Cyberpower Systems forum, but
they're just as puzzled.
Apparently there is a lot if 'it' around.
So much for getting a new computer :-(

If you have active speakers, they must be plugged in to the sound card and
also to electricity. Ensure that the the mute button on the keyboard is not
operated. Raise the volume level above it's minimum. In Control Panel,
look into the settings for sounds. There are many ways that sound can be
disabled. Good luck!
