Network Activity Indicator (?)

With previous versions of Windows, each network setup could
be represented on the [can't think of the name of the small
place on the taskbar for certain running programs to place
an icon, showing that they're running]. Network activity
would cause the icon to change color.

Is there a way to do this in Windows 7?

It's variously called the System Tray or the Notification Area.

It might be configurable in your network setup or you might need to
Google for a third party application to do that. I know it can be done,
but I have no more concrete suggestions (except that in my laptop it
seems to have happened without any action on my part).

The icon SHOULD show , it just doesn't 'do ' anything ( ie it doesn't blink
as the good old one in XP did...) I fail to understand why they changed
it..?
Drives me CRAZY !! I moved my cable modem onto my desk from the floor so I
could monitor it's activity lights instead

I use BitMeter on all of my Win7 machines. You can download it free at CNET.
Shows activity both in and out.
