Mouse hangs up

I have a Logitech wireless (Blue Tooth) laser mouse. O/S is Windows 7
Professional, 64 bit, and 12Gb RAM. Periodically, the mouse hangs up. The curser
just sits in one place and I can't move it for 20-30 seconds. Then it frees up.
Any idea what could cause this annoyance? Thanks.

Some cordless mice go to sleep quite fast. It takes some movement for
them to recognize they should wake up. Can't get around the nuisance
unless you continually keep moving the mouse before the idle timeout.
You never mentioned how long the mouse has been idle before it goes to
sleep. Often it's not user configurable so you have to find one that
doesn't go to sleep as often but that also means it stays on longer
which drains the battery during non-use.

Could be the mouse, could be the OS. Start by replacing the mouse with a
wired one for a while.

Only 12GB RAM? Have you thought about upgrading?
Cleaned the bottom (sensor lens) of the device?
With a Q-tip?
The mouse surface clean and appropriate?
The batteries fresh and firmly in place?
The receiver clean, seated and located appropriately?

Logitech sucks. I have a Microsoft, and it works just fine,
but sometimes you really have to "shake it like a Polaroid
picture" to wake it up after a period of non-use. It uses
batteries at a pretty fair click too. Alkalines and
rechargeables work, but don't last as long as lithiums.
Alkalines tend to fade-out then die; whereas lithiums trudge
on working then suddenly die... YMMV.

The mouse's software correct and up to date?

The thing you might notice is how large these driver
downloads are...

Amazing. Logitech = large drivers/leetle buttons... Hate 'em!

HTH.

You should not define your world in terms

rather, you should view the world in terms
of how things "actually are", recognizing

This would immeasurably bring *much* more

I could help you with that... but...

I've used Logitech keyboards satisfactorily for years and for the last
few years they and the mouses have been cordless. Towards the end of the
life cycle of my previous machine, I started having hangups as you
describe. As far as I could tell, they were associated too many
underpowered USB devices. I even used a powered hub but I still got the
hangups. I've been running a new machine with 8 USB2 ports for two
months now without problems.

I find that, to wake up a napping mouse, clicking one of the buttons
often works better than moving the mouse.

I also agree that fresh batteries might be needed.

Finally, I had a problem like what you describe. Nothing worked.
Rebooting, System Restore, new batteries, prayer...

Then I got the idea of unplugging the power supply (after turning the
computer off!). Success...

BTW, this is an all-in-one desktop that runs off of a laptop-style power
block. What I unplugged was the DC end that goes into the computer, if
that matters.

Have you confirmed that it's just the mouse and not the whole system?

If not, next time it happens, do an alt-tab to switch to another open
program or press the Windows key and see what happens. If nothing, it
may not be the mouse.

Some wireless mice goes through batteries like crazy. Although I use
rechargeable batteries so that doesn't bother me too much. As if they
last a month or a week, it doesn't matter much to me.

Although I like wireless keyboards too. So I was favoring wireless
keyboard and mouse combos. I did have one HTPC keyboard/mouse in one
that used IR about 10 years ago. I liked it except the mouse was a mini
joystick in the far top right of the keyboard.

Well recently I moved away from the wireless keyboard and mouse combos
once again and moved back to the modern HTPC keyboard/mouse. So
currently I am using one of those Visento HTPC keyboard combo. It sports
a keyboard and a touchpad like a laptop, but far better. And the
batteries last about 6 months. And the receiver lights up whenever you
use the touchpad or the keyboard. So you know they are talking.

I also have a wireless mouse connected for the times that a touchpad
just doesn't cut it. Although I am finding out less and less I don't
even need the wireless mouse except for two games.

There is only one big problem that bothers me with this Visento HTPC
keyboard combo. It might be just this one or something. But sometimes it
will just quit talking. The fix is easy, remove the two center AAA
batteries (there are four of them) for a second and then reinstall. Any
other batteries won't work. I am sure I will add a switch to do the same
thing if it continues. It seems to happen once or twice a day.
