Language Packs

Question for you guys. We bought a laptop for a friend in Italy. We're
planning on brining it with us when we go. The problem is it's windows 7
Home Premium. Does anyone know how to change the Language Pack from English
to Italian on this version? Everything I've been reading suggests we upgrade
to ultimate, which is nuts in my opinion. Any help would be great,
thanks....

Google > windows 7 home premium install language pack < and the options
don't look good. You may just have to upgrade, really sucks.

I checked the MS web site list comparing the various flavors of Windows 7
and it agrees that Home Premium does not have the ability to install
multiple languages.

However...I looked at MSDN and verified that there is an Italian version
(which would not be able to be converted to English) - but the MSDN product
code for Home Premium is not marked as being specific to any particular
language. This doesn't prove that retail product keys aren't
language-specific (and doesn't really *prove* anything about MSDN keys
either; I've not tested them), but it's possible that what you need is the
Italian media, assuming that you want Italian and not English with
occasional forays into Italian.

Depending on who you bought the Windows copy from, and the terms of that
sale, and whether the dealer can actually use the disk you return, you might
be able to swap the disks out. If you have a name-brand machine with an OEM
distribution, call the customer service desk to ask about a swapout. The
answer may be "no" but it won't hurt to try.

If you really need to use language packs, the MS chart says you'll need
Ultimate (or Enterprise, but that's available only to volume customers with
SA).

or Recovery Media in Italian, but that could bring licensing problems
and driver problems.

You have two choices:

1. Upgrade to Ultimate

2. Buy an English copy of Home Premium.

You mean Italian copy...

(to the OP) or 3. As someone else suggested, contact the OEM and see if
something can be done about that issue. (This should have been done BEFORE
buying)

Yes, thanks for the correction. He wrote "We bought a laptop for a
friend in Italy," meaning he bought it in the US or UK for a friend
who was in Italy, and I misread it as he bought it in Italy for a
friend in the US or UK.

Yes, it certainly doesn't hurt to try that, but I'm not optimistic.
But that's not really number 3; it should be tried before he does my
number 1 or 2.

Thanks for the help. We're going to purchase the ultimate upgrade. As much
as it pains me to do this, I really don't have much of a choice. I'm hoping
Microsoft changes their practice on this, it's kinda dickey to do this. If
you purchase a license, what difference does it make what language you use,
you should be able to change it when you want to, it's your license.

You can get the Enterprise version for free with a license to use it for
600 days. Just search Microsoft.com for the details. Use the search words,
"Windows 7 Enterprise trial". You have to have a Windows live or Hotmail
account to get it.
The first search result shows this, which is only a 90 day trial, and
Italian is not one of the languages available:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/cc442495

Most of the other results are forums questions about the trial version.
