Installing JEdit on Win 7 64-bit

It's been quite awhile since I needed jEdit. I had something like
4.0.0, but removed it from my PC a month or two ago. I
just installed jEdit 5.0.0 today. When I tried it, it told me that I
need Java, and pointed me to a Java 1.6.0 runtime environment page.
Presumably I need to install the environment. I've heard in the past
that Java might be a trouble maker, i.e, spreads viruses. Am I on safe
ground to do the install?

You can get the latest version here

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre7-downloads-1880261.html

I don't have it installed right now, but you can disable it in your
browser to be safe.
