I learned plenty today about Win7

I have been pouring over the Windows7 Pocket Guide and let me tell you,
for a man pretty apathetic about you can't teach me new tricks, this book
is full of gems!!!

Trouble was I began reading it and things I hadn't thought of "got in my
way" and reading about other STUFF!!! I forgot what I first wanted to
know in the first place. Spent more time "under the hood" since I got
Win7 weeks ago.

Lots of "blind flashes of comprehension," happened all day long. :)))

I thought the cleantemp.bat lesson was a nice bit of magic, among others.
I stopped shy of messing with the registry, which I used to be fairly
comfortable doing. Thought it best not to try to accomplish everything
dangerous that I didn't entirely understand.

Strange though, about the cleantemp.bat magic is that after it clears the
Temp folder it creates files in that folder when it's done. I was
expecting a brand-spanking-empty Temp folder. ??

Best,

Andy

I learned today that is appears that Windows 7 is no better than Vista.
Buggy and defective with a browser that refuses to connect and work
correctly with some pretty generic web sites as well as with RWW on
Microsoft Windows Server. I also learned that Dell offers no software
support on the OEM software they sell bundled with their systems. Sure
their technical support policy says that they do offer limited support but
in reality what they do is engage the user in a discussion of fees and
payment method for their support before they will discuss anything with you.
The machine and Windows 7 is going back and it appears we can not upgrade
our office to Windows 7 after all because it does not connect with RWW to
our SBS2003 Server. RWW is the most compelling reason for us to use
Windows, and if it doesn't work then means we have to create a VPN
configuration to use with RDC... and that means we can then choose OSX
instead of Windows.

Examples? No problems here, no bugs, and no "defective" web browser.
as well as with RWW on Microsoft Windows Server.
RWW? What's that?

Then don't buy Dell. QED.

Wait till you hit Powershell, that will distract you plenty and you'll have to get a load more books!

Then you've done something wrong - I have dozens of customers with SBS
2003 and 2008 and they have no problem with using RWW to connect to
their networks via RWW on Win 7 machines.

I have a few Win 7 machines here and don't see the problems you suggest,
and it's far faster and more stable than Vista.

Agreed. And i believe that the something is that I purchased a Dell with
Windows 7 ;)

I described the specific issue in a separate thread but no responses as yet.
Just wanted to present a different opinion in this thread that seemed more
like Microsoft propaganda than anything concrete or meaningful.
Interestingly this fluff thread has attracted several responses, but my
thread about an actual problem has received none.

I've been on usenet since 84, so it's nothing new to me. My reason for
reading threads is based on the Subject catching my eye.

I often ignore threads that appear to be simple, there are normally tons
of responses for those.

I don't show names/from in my Usenet client, just the thread subject and
date/time (by choice).... what is the subject of your other post and
I'll take a look.

Dave-UK,

I think I remember an experience like that years ago learning Perl!

The members over on the Perl newsgroup were a great help and great
motivators. Kinda/sorta like this placce!

Best,

Andy
