How do I make Windows 7 x64 use IE x86 instead of IE x64?

If I click on a link in a NG posting or Favorites folder, my computer
opens it with the 64 bit version of IE. I want it to use IE x86 by default.

Have you tried starting the 32-bit version and setting it as the default in
Internet Options?

Yes. (Internet Explorer x64 cannot be the default browser.)

Hi, Crash.

Don't you have that backwards? Win7 x64 defaults to 32-bit IE - and can't
be changed. At least, not by us mere mortals.

(My other Reply, which I posted a few minutes ago, was based on the
assumption that you were trying to make 64-bit the default - which I don't
think is possible without divine intervention.)

I just tried the obvious.

I started iexplorer 64-bit by clicking on it in the Program Files
directory, and verified by help-about that it was the 64-bit version.

I shut it down and clicked on a link in a new post. The IE window that
appeared identified itself as the 32-bit version; more precisely, it
*didn't* identify itself as the 64-bit version :)

But then I had a thought, so I killed Mr 32-bit & restarted the 64-bit
version. This time the link showed up in that window, the already
running 64-bit IE. I checked with About again, just to make sure.

I can't think of anything useful to say about that...

Don't know about the Favorites folder but it looks like you're using
Thunderbird for newsgroups. I don't know TBird either but does it have a
setting for "content viewers" or the like? Perhaps you have to point this
at the proper location for IE x86.

These two threads have become too tangled to reply to anybody, so I'll
just give a progress report. Using the tip I found to acquire ownership
of the 64 bit Internet Explorer program, I renamed it "iexplore64.exe."
I haven't crashed in flames, and that seems to have solved the problem.

Well, I omitted an important fact from the above. Such a dolt...At
least the post passed the spell check :)

After I started IE 64, I went to settings and made it the default
browser. *Then* I did the rest of the tests I described below.

It's easy to make IE the default browser. but it's not so easy to specify
IE x64!

Unless you've found some magic that has eluded me, making "IE" the default
means "IE x86" - "NOT IE x64".

Or did I misunderstand what you said?

The Subject of this thread is backwards: Win7 x64 DOES default to the x86
version of IE, not the x64 version.

The subject of this thread is NOT backward. I had a problem with Windows
7 x64 opening pages with IEx64 instead of IEx86 even though IEx86 was
set to be the default. This didn't happen all the time, only some of the
time for unknown reasons. I suspect it has something to do with the
InternetExplorer object being used in some scripts I run. Possibly
scripts run in a 64 bit environment use the IEx64 engine, and that
becomes the default. Anyway, I renamed the 64 bit iexplore.exe file to
iexplore84.exe, and that seems to have solved the problem. And yes, the
scripts still work.

Looks like you did misunderstand.

I said that I opened the 64 bit browser, chose "Make this the default",
then closed it. When I then clicked on a link, it opened in x86...

....unless the 64-bit version was already open on-screen. Then the link
appeared on a tab in that 64-bit window.

I did the experiment to test (and BTW verify) your remark "Win7 x64
defaults to 32-bit IE - and *can't be changed*" (emphasis mine). Crash
actually said a similar thing eslewhere in this thread.
The Subject of this thread is backwards: Win7 x64 DOES default to the x86
version of IE, not the x64 version.
No, the subject isn't backwards, but I hadn't noticed your remark to
that effect in the post I replied to. That anomaly was the problem that
Crash was having.

It's kind of odd that instead of top or bottom posting, you copied part
of my response to the top and then replied in line with it :)

Anyway, I left the rest of the quoting intact for reference purposes.

NB: the above sig was quoted by my NR because your sig delimiter lackes
the extra space after the two hyphens, i.e. "--" instead of "-- ".

Hi, Crash.

Rather than try to untangle the threads, let me just apologize for
misreading your Subject line and OP.

It was not until your third post, when you mentioned scripts, that I
realized that, yes, you really were trying to run IE x86, not IE x64. My
experience with scripts is practically zero since the days of DOS batch
files and such. So I ASSumed wrongly and posted an "answer" that did not
apply to your question. Since I don't know anything about scripts, I'll bow
out of this discussion now and watch from the sidelines. :^{
