High CPU utilization

My 3.4GHz quad-core machine with Win7Pro is averaging approx. 30% CPU
utilization (with occasional 100% peaks on individual cores) when doing
absolutely nothing. The processes all show zero, but there does not seem
to be a way of showing what the various services are using.

Is this to be expected, or does my installation need to be repaired or
restored from a Restore Point?

You may find Process Explorer enlightening.

You should run a Add Ware ... Spy Ware detector / remover.

Best for free I know of & use is Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

I'm not saying its that but you should check regularly.
