When I open say "my pictures" I want the content view of folders to be
"list." When I open the folder I want the view to be "medium icons."

How do I do that so I don't have to go up to the corner box and change it.

Thanks for any info.

This is a general method for any folder type.

Change the settings for a folder to what you like for that folder and
then click on Organize - Folder Options, then the View tab.

In the top pane there, click on Apply to Folders.

The fine print there says "You can apply the view (such as Details or
Icons) that you are using to all folders of this type". That means what
Windows deems to be "all folders of this type" :)

Note that you need to do this for one folder of each type, so do it for
My Pictures and again for one of the folders there.

OTOH, in my experience, Windows 7 remembers the settings for each
folder, so once you've set up a given folder, you should see it the same
way when you return to it (as long as you haven't altered it globally as
above).

Good luck.

No, I can't seem to get what I want. In the organise, folder, view tab,
no matter what I click or alter in "my pictures" or in an open folder
within "my pictures" the "apply to folder" and Reset folder" is always
greyed out.

Make sure you're accessing the desired folder directly, and not via a
Library view.

Maybe I was doing that.... now can do it
Thanks

That's an interesting argument against avoiding Libraries. I couldn't
properly advise the OP because I had never experienced that problem.

OTOH, it's also another good argument against using Libraries. Why
should Explorer not let you view Libraries the way you want to?

I tried to downplay the Library mention, to keep it very low key, but
of course I got busted. :)

I do like, though, the fact that you acknowledged both sides of the
argument, arguing both for and against. I agree with you, as well, on
the apparent contradiction. How hard would it be to leave the Apply To
Folders button active, regardless of Library status? It does seem to
be technically possible.

A programmer was about to do that, but then the person in the next cube
said let's go to lunch, and the other person forgot. It might have been
because of the second beer.

That's quite feasible. I once got distracted when the lady in the next
cube showed me the Dilbert comic of the day. By the time we got done
chatting, I had no idea where I had left off.

My luck has been better on occasion.

Typically, I'd be totally bogged down on some problem, no insight, no
clue. Then nature would call.

While I was - uh - answering nature, suddenly the needed idea would pop
into my head and I'd return to my desk and take care of the problem.

This was mostly when I was trying to debug stuff, especially stuff I
hadn't written...

I haven't experienced the flashes of brilliance at quite the same
moments as you, but I've done some of my best work when I've been
asleep! On more than one occasion, I've had wonderful algorithms come
to me while I slept, so that all I had to do was get out of bed and
type it in.

Either way, these background processes (psych types call them
subconscious process, perhaps) are useful, and IMO, fun.

My restroom events probably amount to breaking out of the loop that my
brain might be stuck in. Relieving not just the pressure, but the
tension, you might say :)

Things like that occur to me when I in the shower, in bed, or on
a walk among other things.

I think we need to flush this discussion and put a stopper in it
before it gets too far. :)

No. If you put a stopper in, then someone is going to have to get
out a plunger to unstop it.

From My Sig Collection:

It is interesting to note that before the advent of Microsoft Windows,
"GPF" was better known for its usage in plumbing:
Gallons Per Flush
