Try copying the link and pasting it into the address bar of your
browser.

If your newsreader and browser were set up properly, clicking on the
above link would have given you an opportunity to download or run the
file (the file is "Firefox Setup 6.0.exe"; the symbol %20 stands for a
space).

It works for download here, in accordance with my setup, but I won't
install it until Mozilla asks me politely.

You're holding it wrong :)

Try this. Open this link in your browser.

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/6.0/win32/en-US/

You should be seeing something like this:

Name Size Last Modified
Firefox Setup 6.0.exe 13650 KB 8/11/2011 10:57:00 PM <-----
Firefox Setup 6.0.exe.asc 1 KB 8/12/2011 12:06:00 AM
index.html 1 KB 8/13/2011 2:20:00 AM

Locate this entry. Right click on it and select "Download"

Firefox Setup 6.0.exe

When I downloaded, the file I got on disk is

Firefox Setup 6.0.exe 13,977,256 bytes

I can open it with 7ZIP for a look, and inside it
has a "core" folder and a setup.exe file.

I'm not going to actually execute it, because that's
your job :)

Running the file.exe program against it, reports the file type as:

Firefox Setup 6.0.exe;
PE32 executable for MS Windows (GUI) Intel 80386 32-bit

so, yup, it's a program of some sort.

Have fun,
Paul

This is a beta or release candidate and is likely to be buggy. Best to
wait until its officially released.

They've realised people are going to get bored of version numbers
rolling over every few weeks, so are now going to not have a (user
visible) version number at all ...

Yea, I saw that and read the bug reports on it.
FF must be designed for the mindless masses.
All my software is set for manual updates or is blocked.
I don't like software that calls home automatically so that
their servers can see what is on my computer.

So how are they going to persuade people to upgrade?

Or, will one of the upgrades switch auto-upgrade on irreversibly? (If
that happens, someone please warn us!)

Harrumph. I let 6 install, only to discover that they've _still_ not
implemented something that tells you which of your add-ons won't work
after the upgrade _before_ you do so. The code is obviously almost
there, since more or less the first thing it does _after_ an upgrade, is
to tell you which add-ons it has broken.

As it happens, I'm so p***** off that unless they implement this, I'll
certainly not be an "early adopter" of the next upgrade.

Yes, they have. I started the upgrade from 5 to 6, and it told me one
of my add-ons wouldn't work, and gave me the opportunity to cancel,
which I did.

For me, that functionality worked when I went from 3 to 4, 4 to 5, and
5 to 6. In fact, I don't remember a time when it didn't work, so I
don't know what J.P.'s talking about.

I need to know it has the "firefusk" add in, because I download a lot
of images. Firefox 4 doesn't seem to have it!

Do you have to call up the check by some arcane method? I just let it
upgrade (to 6, and before that to 5), and at no point was I aware of
anything saying anything like "if you do this upgrade xxx will stop
working - do you want to continue?".

No, it's automatic, and always has been, IIRC.

In Tools, Options, select Advanced, then select Update. In the second
section there, called "When updates to Firefox are found", you'll be
warned about obsolete add-ons if you select the first option, and
you'll also be warned about obsolete add-ons if you select the second
option along with its subordinate option to "Warn me if this will
disable any of my add-ons". However, if you select the second option
but you DON'T select it's subordinate option, then you won't be warned
until afterward.

Has your experience been different?

(I'm using 4.01 at the moment, so the label text that you see may be
slightly different if you're using a different version.)
